Hi guys, i have been thinking about getting some upgrade parts for my 10/22 for a while now, and today my bolt release would not let go of my bolt, so the time is NOW!

So basically what i am asking is,

1. what parts to upgrade.

2. where to find the suggested parts.

3. how hard it is to install the parts.

I was thinking about trying to find a bolt that stays open after the last round is fired, an extended mag release, recoil absorption, and an larger "charging handle".

But since i dont know if those goals are achievable, i leave the floor to you!

This is going to come up soon, so I'll be the first to ask:

What do you want out of the rifle?

Compact plinker or 200 yard monster? That's what'll determine what you get. You can really upgrade anything and everything (as I'm sure you know), so the best way to get suggestions is to give us a budget and goal. Personally, I'm trying to build an "inexpensive" tactical rifle that'll shoot well under 50 yards, but other people spend a couple grand building benchrest guns that'll shoot MOA at 100+ yards. Some people do a lot of DIY, others prefer to buy the good stuff, and others like to just buy a Volquartsen and be done with it. Without a goal or budget, you'll get a million different suggestions, all of which will work for different purposes.

Having said that... Recoil absorption can be solved with Tuffer Buffers (or other brands like Tactical Solutions, IIRC). I recall seeing some on the sponsor's websites recently, although I can't recall who it was... Perhaps Wanstalls or one of the tactical suppliers. Same with Mag release and bolt handles... It's more about what style/colour/brand you like, as far as I know, as they should all work the same.

As for the bolt staying open... I was reading the "10/22 Tips & Tricks" thread on Rimfire Central, and someone raised that same point. However, the reply was that, since they're mostly rotary magazines, you might have issues with the bolt staying open. Something about having to modify all your magazines to do it. It's not that hard to count your shots though, and apparently dry-firing is fine for the 10/22, so it might not be worth worrying about. I believe it was on page two or three, if you want to go check out that thread.

Check out hical.ca, Dave usually has lots of 10/22 stuff in stock. There is a kit using modified 10 rd mags to hold open on the last shot, I think Bits Of Pieces in BC sells them. You need to buy the modified mags with it. I have no idea how well it works. For charging handles your best bet is a drop-in assembly with guide rod and spring. If your 10/22 is newer it will have a very rough guide rod. The nicely polished aftermarket rods will smooth out the action and improve reliability. The factory guide rods are crimped to prevent the charging handle from separating when removed from the rifle. Kind of a PITA to dissasemble just to reuse the rough guide rod. There are no "must have" upgrades, just lots of options to choose from. Hical is a good place to start your search.

for just a quick and dirty to get the most bang for your buck.

get some VQ internals for your gun (they sell a kit.... trying to remember what they call it, Bolt tune up kit?)
bolt release, everyone makes one (VQ, TI, TS)
TS extended mag release.
a VQ or TI or Dlask charging handle.
that run ya 100-150 and youll be happy with it all im sure.

Wanstalls usually has a nice selection of TS and TI stuff on hand.
Mil-Arm usually has VQ stuff on hand or can get it for ya.
Dlask can get ya what ya need.... but be warned.... once you start to buy from them you'll keep adding more and more on!

i think im into mine for $1250 now, haha!
