10.22 winter build

Thinking about putting together a shorty 10.22 over the winter. Starting to look for parts now and I have a couple of questions. I'm considering an 8.5 inch barrel, but don't want a restricted rifle. If I keep the OAL of the rifle more than 26 inches, I assume the length of barrel should not matter. Correct?
I was considering using a collapsible M4 type stock.

Anyone else have suggestions on how to use a barrel of this length and keep it non-restricted?

Should I just go with a longer length barrel?

i'm building a short 10/22 now.. but i chose the 11.5 barrel. as long as the barrel is over the handgun minimum and OA length is 26 inches it is still non restricted.

best check with him but I thought I bought the last one and it was in stainless. I took it out shooting and it is a great barrel, very well made and finnished. I would suggest finding one like it. 11.5
