10/22 WMR to 17 HMR Conversion

Hey Gang!
Just finished a Ruger 10/22WMR conversion to 17HMR.
I've only shot 27 rounds from it and had 3 FTF/light strikes, but I'm still fine tuning the cycling of the bolt and the spring weight.
I took a stock Ruger 10/22 magnum and added:

- A new GM 17HMR barrel for a Ruger 77/22 (custom made a spacer ring to accommodate the longer barrel shank)
- Power Custom titanium extractor and firing pin
- V.Q. magnum trigger group
- 1 and 1/2 KIDD "red" charging handle springs
- Hogue black magnum stock
- Tasco 6-24X50 AOE scope

She's no hot rod in the looks department, but it has a real nicely balanced feel to it.
I still need some target time, but hoping to get the bugs out before summers end!

Didn't they make these for a while, and recall them because they (and 597s) had out-of-battery discharges? Something about the blowback action not liking the velocities?

Remington stopped making the 17HMR due to firing out of battery and instances of the cases splitting without evidence of being out of battery

Ruger never made a 17HMR (advertised but never launched the rifle). They made the 22WMR that people started converting to 17HMR. The 17 conversion requires a heavier recoil spring and/or charging handle to be successful. Originally people were just changing out the barrel and when the metal stop pin bent and cracked the bolt or receiver, the shooter would change the barrel back and send the gun in for warranty work.
Ruger stopped making the 22WMR due to duel extraction problems and liability issues due to improper conversions.

I agree, cool rifle, neat project, hope to see a range report added.
I just got a .17hmr myself and been doing a bunch of reading about it and this rifle is up there on the cool factor.
