10 gauge full choke ammo?

Just got a beautiful H&R 10 gauge model 176 and it has a fixed full choke barrel.
There are tons of post everywhere saying no to slugs, yes to slugs, no to steel, yes to steel depending on what type of choke design. There doesn't seem to be a lot of 10 gauge ammo out there and all I've found is steel shot or slugs.
So, how do I know if its OK to shoot steel shot or slugs out of this heavy barreled beauty? Do I need to measure the choke bore taper and decide if its progressive enough to handle it?

Measure it up or run it to a smith and have him check it. I would not be shooting slugs or steel through it before that. I had a Spanish double ten with both sides opened to modified from full. The gunsmith I took it to checked and verified this, and recommended that though it was safe to use with steel, that it would eventually prematurely wear the barrels at the chokes. Claimed if I kept running high intensity steel loads that the gun would wear quickly.So I sold it.And having one cut for chokes from a full choke is doable, but by the time you spend that money, it puts the gun into that higher price range where you may have been able to buy something with interchangeable from factory. YMMV.

I would sell it and get something with interchangeable chokes. Full choke is too restrictive.

lead slugs are fine in any choke ,as the lead is softer then the steel your barrel is made of .steel shot is another matter ,,,if your gun has the heavy barrel with a fixed full choke I would no be shooting large size steel shoot ,Thy do make a great turkey gun with a load of #5 lead shot ,,,lolDutch

The only ammo I can find is steel shot or slugs, and that's even hard to come by!

you should be able to find lots of lead turkey ammo for the big 10g this stuff will work well on coyotes and jack rabbits to. small steel shot like 5 or 6 shot should work well for ducks .I would not shoot the big stuff like bbb or bb ...thy do have a very heavy barrel ..have a smith check it out for you and if you donot hunt turkeys with it have the smith open the choke to a mod so you can shoot geese with steel in it ..Dutch
