Lookin for good steel goose loads for the 10. Load my own shells. Also could recommend reading materials and components for shells.

thanks

With my 10ga 3 1/2" SxS, I'm still debating wheather to go for the additional cost of Bismuth or open the chokes and use steel. If you're looking for some good loads, the Lyman Shotshell Reloading Handbook, 4th Edition has a lot of excellent loads using quite a variety of different components. For hulls I have and will be using the the hulls from Federal Premium shells I've shot off.

 Why 10 ga? Steel BBs at 1500fps, in 3 inch 12ga work well in early season and the the Fed Balckcloud BBB is awesome now in October. During November, I will use tungsten BB. After several hundred birds each seson, this works very well!

Best rgrds,
Henry
PS:Try patterning a 10 ga or a 3 1/2 12, you will be in for a surprise!

Why a 10ga (3 1/2")? Because I 'got one'. ;)IF I was in the market for something for Ducks & Geese now, I'd probably go for a 3 1/2" 12ga. I have patterened my 10ga and thats why I'm reluctant to open up the chokes and use steel. Both barrels throw real tight patterns.

I would try duplicating factory loads and then through some judicious(careful) experimenting see if performance could be improved.
Yes, I'll definately have to do that. I believe it used to be Federal Premium loads that had granulated polyethylene to cushion the shot. We used some in our 2 1/4oz handloads as I recall and it did seem to make a difference, but that was with lead shot. Again, the reason I'm a 'little' hesitant to open the chokes is because of the nice tight patterns it throws at present. Opening the chokes, to me, is the equivalent of shortening the barrel or changing the crown on a rifle that shoots really well.

I use winchester supreme #2 and #BB in my SP10. With the stock full or modified chokes depending on the distance I think I'm hunting. I get good patterns to easily 35 yards with the full choke. I have tried Federal, Rem Sportmans and the "other" winchester 10 gauge load and supremes seem to pattern best out of my gun.
The supremes are $24 a box at le barons.

Enjoy, your gun its great when its feeding right.
