Found this 10 point last fall. Coyotes cleaned him but I'm not sure what the cause of death was.

My brother had the same deer on his trail cam a year before, and it was found not too far from his stand.

Have any of you guys ever seen coyotes kill a mature buck like this? It was a healthy deer too by the way. At least it was the fall before, from seeing it on the trail cam.

I think it was either shot by another hunter and never found, or maybe the coyotes did take him down.

(sorry about the poor quality, they are off my cell phone)

I have smaller antlers for rattling with. I wouldn't wanna lug those around with me.

I plan on doing a european mount with it. Anyone on here ever done one themselves? I have done a bobcat skull before. I am thinking for a deer head you would not want to let the antlers touch boil?? Any one have any experience ewith this?

The two Euro's that I did, were just boiled and picked over. No particular care taken to protect anything, other than taking a fair bit of care while cleaning out the sinus area, for all the fine bones there.

They turned out fine. Watch for the cartilage coming apart and for the nose/upper jaw tips coming off in the pot.

I just used water. I did the last one out on the deck, on a Coleman stove. Better relations with the boss that way.

A wire bottle brush (wire handle, not bristles) works good for cleaning out the brain through the spinal cord hole.
IIRC the last one took only one tank of fuel, turned down low for a simmer.

Go for it. Not exactly taking a chance on a Trophy-of-a-lifetime. It'll work out.

Cheers

Have seen coyotes chase healthy deer lots. I intersepted a couple after a doe a few years ago. Ran right under my tree stand. I found a buck this year the coyotes got. This was after season. A doe i found while out calling looked like it was killed by yotes but not sure. PS out here thats a nice 4 point. :) thanks for the post.

Yea, here in NB we don't have the numbers of quality deer that you westerners do.

I guess we count every point we can just to make them sound bigger.:D

Absolutely..........yes I have seen coyotes take down bucks that large. Coyotes kill mature deer a lot more frequently than people think as they have watched Walt Disney too much. We have had packs of coyotes rip adult deer to shreds in the middle of our yard.

Sure the buck could have been wounded by a hunter or from fighting, he could also have just been worn out from the rut and entered the winter in a weakened condition, which is why bad winters tend to kill a lot of the big bucks.

Regardless, coyotes can take down perfectly healthy deer and I have personally observed it a number of times.

I had a friend who experienced something similar - looked out his back window early one morning to see three yotes run down a doe 20 yards from his deck. Not liking yotes much he ran to the safe, pulled his 870 and a fistfull of No 4 shotshells and ran out on the back deck. He got 2/3 of the yotes where they stood and had to use his last round on the doe, which was still alive but pretty much disembowled. His wife was freaking out back in the kitchen.

Question though for folks who've experienced that sort of thing; what's your next step? Do you immediately call up the MNR (or equivalent) to report it?

All provinces of course have different regs...........where I live I could not legally shoot the coyotes unless I had a trapping licence at the time. The deer is not 'livestock' and thus I am not protecting my property. Also shooting the disembowled deer might get you charged for shooting it out of season...............and yes there are CO's who will as I have seen people charged under similar circumstances in three provinces now. They thought they were doing the morally correct thing, but it came back to bite them in the ass in a big way.

I also know people who have seen moose and deer get hit by vehicles, that went out and finished them off and got charged after. One needs to be careful about reacting to these things with your feelings. Stop and think first, because doing the 'right' thing can leave you with a fine and a licence suspension. Phone first and get a verbal OK from the CO.
