I'm looking for clarification whether a 10 round AICS mag is legal for use in a bolt action gun? The regulation seems to indicate if the same mag will fit in a semi auto, it's not legal for a bolt gun. If that's the case why are they selling 10 rounds for use in bolt guns?

It's not about what it happens to fit, it's about what is designed for.

Yes but as an example, the Ruger 10/22. The Butler Creek 25 round mags were designed for the 10/22 rifle which has been around for almost 60 years yet because the same mags also fit the charger pistol which came much later are now prohibited because they also work in the pistol.

Yup. I even have still in packaging spare Butler Creek Steel lips banana mags for the 10/22. The package (from before the Charger was released, which was 2007 or 2009) from 2004 or so says "designed and fits Ruger 10/22". No mention of Charger as it wasn't invented yet (at least retail availability).

Yeah, that one is strange.

This may not be the best methodology but I just look at what is currently legally available for purchase in stores to determine how safe it would be to own it. But even then there is a slippery slope, as lawyers Ian Runkle and Ed Burlew point out, with the LAR15 mags, which are still available through many retail channels for purchase. Designed for LAR15 pistol but fits many AR-platform 5.56/.223. Mr. Burlew even mentioned in a post he has had clients who have been charged with having these - and while they were ultimately cleared it court, it was after significant time and legal expense were expended.

My understanding of AICS was that they were designed exclusively for bolt action precision riles. It would certainly be interesting if they fit into anything else.

You are the only person I've heard of who is not using theirs.

I would also be very curious to know if any semi's could feed from AICS mags.

I've heard of Bolts and Semis sharing LAR mags and SR-25 mags, but never AICS style.

Pretty sure i have them for my AR180B

If yours works, I'd love to know how you got it working. Two different systems. My Savage, MDT and Ruger AICS mags, even at a distance - you can see they are a lot wider than your typical AR PMAG/30, Lancer, LAR15, etc. and will not fit. They don't fit into my WK180, not by any stretch.

Ask the same question in a couple of months.

Mandate letter to Public Safety Min

Requiring the permanent alteration of long-gun magazines so that they can never hold more than five rounds;
Banning the sale or transfer of magazines capable of holding more than the legal number of bullets;

I suspect an AICS mag in gas-gun would be not great. The locking nub is so small on the rear of the mag that you'd need to engineer a hefty method of retention otherwise it'll flop out under recoil. In bolt guns the recoil only goes one way so it's not really an issue. Usually Gas gun mags need either side magazine retention or have an indexing nub on the front to keep it inside the well (ie AR and AK mags). The single feed might be a problem for bolt head height as well.

Bottom-line, if some mental midget tells you an AICS magazine needs restrictions, they are full of BS.
