Im trying to figure out which mag pouches to get for some RA XCR-L x39 10 round mags. Since they're so short, what pouches do you use/what creative solutions have you found to deal with the size?

I don't really want to use mag extensions because i like the size they are when in the rifle. Are ranger plates (or something similar) a must have? I thought the magpul mag assists would be nice, but i doubt they'd fit when the mag goes in the rifle:p

So what's your solutions? Found small pouches?

I used regular mag pouches and cut up some old socks to stuff in. I had the base plates with the handles that did not obstruct use in the rifle.

Blade-tech offers 3 different styles that could be used. I use the revolution as that's all that they had at the time but the eclipse looks really low profile.

I have extensions on mine, but ranger plates work if that's your preference. I cut some styrofoam packing to the perfect length and jammed it in the bottom of my pouches. Works great!

This ^^^. When I have shorter magazines I simply use the standard pouches and put cut squares of the black packing foam that electronics comes in (like actual circuit boards) and then wrap in in a scrap of cloth (cloth is easier to replace than the foam if it gets dirty, wet, etc). If everything is cut just right the magazines look just like standard capacity (aka 20 round .308 or 30 round AR15) and sit in the pouch the same.

What about buying m14 mag pouches for 20 round mags? They look a lot shorter than "regular" 556 nato mags.

Thanks for the info guys

Lots of side to side play with M14 magazine pouches as they are designed to hold a much wider magazine.

HSGI tacos will keep the mag at the exact height you want when inserting into the pouch via retention

I run c product tacti-pulls myself over ranger plates, but that's personal preference

You could definitely get away with no assist using tacos. Just sit in half way and you should be ready to rock

I just take the plastic cartridge holders that come in a 20 round box of AE .223 ammo an cut one in half. Put both halves it in the standard mag pouch and you are good to go. Puts the lar mag at the perfect height. Ranger plates or magpuls are a must though. Cheap and easy solution and they last a while and simple to replace. ITW fast mags work as well.

I purchased a 2x2 pouch from Wilde Custom Gear. It came with two black plastic Molle/belt straps. Each pocket also had a bungee cord to hold down the magazine, but I removed them. The pouch fit doesn't provide positive retention. Walking about and going to the ground is not a problem, but inversions can dump the magazines as I would imagine rolling around on the ground. I actually like the aesthetics of the pouch and the baby magazines. Looks closer to the stripper-clip or single-shot ammunition pouches of the old days. Extracting a magazine by feel is not a problem without gloves. With gloves and lacking that fine tactile feedback, it's harder and require more practice.

I use magwedges to make each one longer and Esstac pouches. This makes them long enough to grab easily.

I don't bother trying to flip them end-for-end when running a stage, I just drop the empty one and pull the next one.
This means less reloading before the next stage as I can flip them in the pouch after picking them up,
