Im upgrading the scope on my savage 10 and need to switch bases so I was thinking of going with a 20moa base. Id like to get into longer range shooting at some point but currently only have 200-250 yards available. Will a 20moa base be a problem in any way if im doing shorter distances like this? Im looking at a Sightron SIII 6-24X50 LRMOA if that makes any difference.

I guess that would have been useful. Im shooting .223... I dont think ill ever find more than 500 yards where I live... to darn many trees. I figured if I need to buy a new base anyway, might as well get one that would be most attractive to a buyer if I ever decide to sell down the road. Thanks for the info. Glad to hear this will work for me.

I actually bought a DNZ 1 piece tactical mount. So its not technically a base/rings setup. I got the Savage short action, high, 30mm, 20moa Tactical. I have a 1 inch medium right now and I like it. But my new scope will be a 30mm so I had to change anyway.

You don't need one for 250yards, you won't even need it for 500.
Once you start shooting longer distance, you might want more, so buy the rail just in case. ;)

There is a variation from rifle to rifle between the position of the receiver top to the muzzle. before you take your current scope off, set your 100 yard elevation and then count how many minutes of "up" are left on the current scope. If you can get another 35 minutes, then you don't need a ramped base. The new scope would have far more than enough "up".

Here's a spot to check. Drive up to 118 and then head east. If I'm not mistaken there's a serious powerline corridor there. I'd have already checked if there's good shooting in it but I don't have an ATV and it looks like I'd have to hike in for a bit.

I know of that power line. It has a snowmobile trail along it. I actually have a large powerline right behind my office, which is where I shoot now. Unfortunately, the undergrowth has become more of an underforest so without building a benchrest that sits above the weeds, id have to go up with a chainsaw and weed eater or something to get a clear shot. Since most of it isnt my property I dont want to risk that. But im going to keep looking. Im sure ill find something. Makes my drives through the county alot more interesting.

been offroading on that trail many times. good ol' ardbeg. awesome spot for LR.

ive bin shooting 1000+ for acouple years now. I have a NF with 100 min adj , with a 20 min rail. At 1140 im around 37 min of adjustment with a 200 yard Zero. 7mm with a 180 berger. I think if your using a magnum you'll be fine any route you take.
