Jungle .303 help

Hi guys, I would like to know what my options are. I bought a .303 Jungle rifle and it needs some work. The two holes that the rear sight would mount to have been shaved off and a badly mounted weaver sight in its place. I was thinking of getting an old school side rail and scope mounted. Any suggestion and were to buy?

This is the sight that was on the rear. Only had one screw and was flopping around.

Get your hands on a Number 4; the Bodies (receivers) were identical in that part.

Don't even THINK about switching barrels! It is a mean and ugly job if you don't have the proper tools and the expertise to do it without marring anything. Switching is not an option because the Carbine receiver is quite different and it is marked differently. Switching would just give you TWO Bubbas!

Have the Jungle Carbine receiver welded back so you have the right "lumps" available.

File the "lumps" down so they re the right size and shape, the drill the holes correctly.

You just put $200 in your pocket.

AND, if you want a scope, the rifle will still accept an S&K Insta-Mount or a Gairlochian mount, available from the fellow of that name on this forum.

Have fun.

Warp and heat treat ? :D Those lumps are pretty close to the locking lugs. Gotta wonder if this is a good idea. Still would be not original.

Grizz

Top lug locks on RH side of the action, bottom lug in its recess in the LH side. Not too close.

If you're worried, pack it in iced cloths and use a heliarc.

Many years ago, there was a wonderful machinist in Winnipeg named George Welbanks. I took him an engine from a 1939 Triumph Speed Twin (only 12 brought to Canada) which had had the mounting lugs smashed off when the bike was smushed by a Chrysler. He routed everything out (porous castings soaked with oil from the collision: get down to bare metal) and heliarc-welded it all back together, just as good as the day it left Coventry. About halfway through the job, he muttered, "I don't know what this s**t is, but it welds beautifully!"

The crankcases on the pre-War Triumph Speed Twins were made of a Magnesium-based alloy.

Yeah, there are a few GOOD welders around.

Take the thing to a place which works on aircraft; they will understand.

Looks like you have two holes on left side of receiver, that
would be perfect for angle iron scope mount.

A Cad Technik no gunsmithing mount would work. Brownell's or Ebay sells them.
The S&K or B Square mounts require the rear sight ears.

Come to think of it, the receiver is buggered anyway for originality. Maybe one of these?

I don't think the previous owner was satisfied with his drill and tapping the first time. Since the holes are there, I would try to make use of them and mount a scope on as the collector value has been buggered.

I don't know anything about welding. I wounder why some one would have cut off the rear mounts. I really like the side scope idea but I'm having difficulty finding "Cad Technik no gunsmithing".

There's no point paying the premium $ for a no gunsmithing mount. I see you have drilled and tapped holes already present. Seriously, consider using the

I can be happy with this. I'm not lazy just live in a condo and don't really have much for tools.
I really appreciate the help. I was looking for some time not knowing what I was looking for.

Also just noticed the rear sight aperture is missing.
