Can anyone recommend a higher quality .22 LR cartridge for shooting in my target rifle at ranges over 50 metres? I get pretty good 100 m results with the hens tooth Federal 514 at that range but as long as I'm paying gold bar prices for ammo thought I might try a bulk buy of one of the fancier Euro brands like say Eley, Fiocchi, Lapua or whatever, the ones the pro level shooters seem to use but hopefully designed for, as I said, 100m ranges. Once I have a recommendation I can start looking for a place that has it, a sport all in itself that is best done in winter.

The plan is that once I've mastered 100 m to the best of my ability, I will go on to 200 m, which I'm told is done all the time with .22 LR and people can shoot dime sized holes with never a miss! That is as I said what I'm told.

sign me up for ammo that shoots dime holes at two hundred yards. buy a variety of different types test and hope you can find a case of the same lot. no easy way to know what will work and hope it isn't the $25 or $30 a box of 50 thats best.

Well, there are people far more knowledgeable than me who will see this and chime in I'm sure...but I know I'd never commit to a brick, let alone a case of any ammo type (no matter HOW cheap/expensive) without running some through my gun to test. I'll let someone else chime in on lot #s, but at the very least....see what your LGS has, buy a box of 50 each, and hit the range. At least you can narrow-down what the best shooters are.

In my 64, I've flirted with some top-shelf stuff to understand the gun's potential. (in my hands=the limiting factor) Lapua Center-X (for example) didn't shoot great, RWS-R50 on the other hand... Based on price, that was the first/last box of 50 of RWS I've ever bought.

I've seen $10/50 ammo out-shoot $30/50 ammo....and I've seen it a number of times. Cost doesn't=quality/accuracy, just consistency in my opinion. But consistent can mean "consistently not stellar" too. :) At least in a given gun.

Might also add...there are factors that impact 22 accuracy when you start to reach out. Specifically, when a bullet goes from supersonic to subsonic on it's journey downrange.

HI
Go on line to either Tesro or Nordic Marksman ''site sponsors''' and buy a sampler packer, they have low, mid , high end sampler packs for sale. You get 5 different samples of 100 rounds of each. Fire at less 35 rounds of each when testing . SK Long Range works quite well in my 1712. Try the ammo at different temp. as well.

There are a lot of threads on 22 ammunition you might find interesting to peruse through. You are going to have to find what works best in your particular rifle, not only what brand but which lot. Different lots of the same brand will produce much different results. If going for ultimate accuracy buy as much ammunition of the lot number that works best as you can afford. Once it’s gone you are back to testing again. For this reason I sold almost all my high end .22’s. Without taking the time and expense to match ammo to my rifles my T1X and CZ’s shoot pretty much as good as they did.

Enjoy jumping into this rabbit hole. My current 64 really like(d) the last case of eley club I bought, it’s gone now thought.

Skip to the end and buy SK Rifle Match and be done.

I bought a few of those variety packs and tested everything from CCI through the SK brands to the spendy Lapua's and Eleys (X-Act, Midas, tenex etc).

If cost were no object, the X-Act stuff is very good...but $0.70 for every bang for a .22 is crazy talk.
And SK Rifle match was 98% as good for much, much less.

This is from a CZ 457 with an IBI barrel though...and each rifle likes different ammo...but I'd give Rifle Match a go.

After testing, how much do you plan to buy . . . A case or a brick?
Talk to Peter at Target Shooting Products and order a box of every lot for which he can supply a case providing your testing i done in a reasonable time frame.
Peter at Nordic will probably be able to do the same thing.
One box, shooting five 10-shot groups will dictate the most accurate lot number and make you order.

Listen to this guy. Not only manufacturer, but brands are less important than lot # when you are using a pro level 22. It is a pay to play at a high level of accuracy. If you find an ammunition brand and lot # that kicks ass in your rifle, buy a case minimum, several if you will keep that rifle. I’ve got some Center-X and Eley Match that gives me 2 out of 3 10 round groups under 1” at 90M.

If you have one rifle to buy for Lot Testing is the way to go,, Fortunately/ unFortunately
have 3 Rifles to feed.
CZ MTR , Cooper M. Varminter , Anschutz 1710

I went the route of finding the Manufacturer (brand) which shot
decently in all first , it happen to be SK Standard Plus , I bought a case . (5,000)

Next , staying with SK /Lapua family I would lot test for the
Rifle I was shooting most with Lapua Center-X .

At least there is some continuity .

Target Shooting Products website seems to be down, at least when I looked yesterday, phone gone too. I was afraid they'd folded.

As far as testing products goes, I've done a lot of that but in the Euro high end they're mostly made for 50 metre ranges, and mostly for biathlon- not that there's anything wrong with that. NordicM had recommended SK long range but they have none. Appreciate all the suggestions, keep them coming.

I guess it all depends how much you're willing to spend, or how much a flier is worth to you...
- Many of the euro ammunition is sorted based on how good a certain lot perform... the orange box might group as well as the black box or the red box (for quite a bit less $) but it might throw the odd flyers.

Korth group as a test-range in Okotoks, AB (I believe)

I tend to agree with Nordic. I've tested just about everything out there from SK/Lapua, Eley & RWS over the years. This past couple of years, I've shot thousands of rounds of Long Range (6 different lot numbers) through Vudoo, Bergara, Weihrauch, Walther, Lithgow AND several Anschutz including a 1761 with factory and custom barrels.

Each lot of LR has shot very well in most of these guns - Never seen that previously with any ammo regardless of price. Sadly, supply has dried up for us too and I only have 600 rounds left!
