I want to start shooting long distance but don't know what caliber to look at.
Out of these which would be the best?
7mm wsm
300 wsm
300 winmag
300 um
I would like to get something that you can shoot and not get the snot pounded out of you. I have read that the winmag and um have alot of recoil to them.

O love the 300WinMag with 190SMK's or the 178A-max (I was shooting the 178 A-max at high speed with alot of REloader22)its a great round!!And you can get awesome Federal Gold Medal Match ammo for it;)

the 7WSM might be a barrel burner and you will have to reload for it,the 300WSM is good but getting the heavy bullets moving might be a problem

Any of those would work. You don't need a magnum to reach 1k though. a 308, 7mm-08 or 223 with proper setups and handloads would allow you to reach 1k and be much cheaper to shoot. To me anyways, the point of shooting is to get out and do it lots. Its too expensive for myself to burn out barrels and spend tons on magnum bullits. I was going to go with a 7mm WSM when I was building my rifle but I settled on 223 with a fast twist. Don't let me discourage you from building a magnum is thats what you really want and you can afford to. I still would like to build a 7MM WSM some day.

the peanut is right,I am using a .308 Remington LTR and even with its 20" barrel I can get out to 1K,I need to watch the wind alot more but out of the ones you listed..I would go 300WM

you should also look at the 260rem,243(hard on barrels) or any 6mm wildcat or 6.5/284 rounds they flat out kill in the wind

All of those choices are going to kick like a mule. plus they dont have the accuracy of lesser cartridges. If you are going to buy a rifle and are going to handload, get a .243 or 6.5 x 55. or .260.
If you dont want to handload, buy a .223 or .308. But if you buy a .223, get a Savage, you need a fast twist barrel to shoot the VLD bullets.

yes they all kick, but I don't know about the rest but the 300WM I was shooting shot SUB MOA all the way out to 1k .5 out to 500Meters;)

so unless you are shooting a benchRest gun....thats all you will ever need to shoot well

Of he ones you listed the 7mm WSM is hard to beat IMHO, I am a bit biased as I am buliding one now, however, with berger 180gn VLD's the 7mm WSM will have half the wind drift of it .30 cal cousins, and roughly equal to if not better than a 6.5mm. If you are shooting competitvely there is no advantage to needing to be twice as good at judging wind as your competitors.

Take a look at http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweekarchive.htmlthis site Look at gun of the week #64
I made up a light hunter in 7mmwsm and it is just a dandy cartridge to load for, I get groups under 1/2 at 200 yards, and recoil is quite managable, my gun only weighs 6.7lbs, the British record at 1000 yards was made last year with the 7mmwsm just under 3" I think you will see more of this cartridge at 1000 yards

roberti11 good links!!

if I was to build a custom i would be a 6mm/22/250 wildcat I plan on building one soon, the 7mm Bergers are great bullets but harder to get,

I would like for you to start a topic on your build with all the Spec's!!

sounds like a real nice gun you working on

Of the cartridges you selected, I would say that the 300 WSM short, fat and efficient design is probably the best as far as potential accuracy while sending heavy bullets and maintaining reasonable barrel life.

Mysticplayer answered this question very well the last time this question was asked and the suggestion came up that it be made a sticky... I think it would be a good idea.

I wouldn't go any smaller than a 7mm, mostly 'cause I like to shoot gongs and reactive targets, and it's DAM hard to hear a 223 hitting a gong way the hell down there.

Personally, I think the 284 would be a dandy cartridge if you're building a custom. It should be able to do anything the 6.5-284 can (lower velocity, but higher BC), although I'll probably end up getting a savage 110FP in 300WM, simply because availibility is good

-i have had two heavy(15 lb.) rifles built in .300 WinMag and .300 WSM
-they both perform flawlessly(shooting around 7-8" @ 1000y)
-both launch a 190gr Sierra Matchking at 3000 fps(both have 28" barrels)
-both have muzzle brakes, which reduces recoil impulse(can shoot them all day), but increases noise/ground signature
-the .300 WSM is to replace the .300 WinMag which i plan to have re-barreled in .300 RUM(would like to try my hand at 1 mile)
-the .300 WSM does everything the WinMag will do but does it more efficiently, in a shorter action length and without the magnum belt on the case(which i believe makes it easier to load for accuracy[imho])
-you may also want to consider a .308 with a 26-28" barrel, and launch a 190gr. pill @2600 fps , that'll get anyone's attention even out to 1000 y(an eg. would be one of those tactical savage .308's with the 26" barrel in the McMillan stock, i have one and am pleased with it)
-regardless of what path you choose, my two cents worth is this, stick with 30 cal.

good luck, good shooting

I would go with the 7mm wsm. Good quality brass from Norma (once you form it).....

i have a rem ks in 300wm, and love it. more accurate at long distances then i am, and youll get used to the kick its not to bad

Well, if your going to that rifle, you might want to consider the 7mm mag using 180 Berger VLD or JLK bullets. The 300 win mag will need a bullet in the 220 range for similar ballistics and you will suffer more recoil.

Magazine length will be an issue either way if you wanted to maintain optimal seating depth of the higher BC bullets like the 210 VLD Berger in 30cal or the 180gr Berger VLD.

When are you planning on buying the rifle and will you be reloading?

Personally I hate the belt on these cases, but good brass can be had from Lapua in 300 Win Mag or Nosler for both.
