Ok, so here the deal, i have been hunting with the same rifle for the last 15 years and am now in the market for something new. I can spend up tp $1000 including taxes etc. for the gun only. So lets hear what you guys would buy considering the following preferences
-must be bolt actoin
-want blued, not stainless
-prefer a gun with some weight to it 7 1/2#'s and up
-synthetic or wood is fine, just not any "plasticy" feeling synthetics
-detachable magazine is a bonus

I'd appreciatie it if we could keep this from being one of those threads were you all tell me "I have model X and like it"....so please justify your choice with so pro's and cons of the rifle, I need some practical info to ponder. I have not been in the gun market for many years and don't want to end up with a POS!!! So far a couple i have been considering are the Rem 700 CDL and the Vanguard sub MOA.

Thanks
Chris

i've seen a brno 21H in 280 improved for sale, i think it was $900 with rings.

pros
beautiful classic rifle

cons
the odd chambering

pm me and i can tell you where i saw it, i don't know if they still have it though.

thanks Mig25, but i should have added that I am not looking for used at this point and I have settled on 30-06 for the calibre.

Thanks anyways though!
Chris

I would consider a tikka T3. I have not heard of one that shoots bad and many that shoot very good. They are well done rifles and IMHO best value for the money

Remmy 700 BDL DM or CDL DM would fit the bill. Inexepensive (relatively), easy to use and maintain, lots of caliber to choose from. Lots of aftermarket for them.

It's not terribly original, but it'll work and fot the bill.

I would recommend you buy a new Remington 700 CDL in 30-06

Pros: Excellent recoil Pad, Ergonomically pleasing, No "Wart" [safety lock], 24" barrel, Matte finish, easily adjusted trigger, price well within your criteria.

Cons: Some feel that Remington Quality is on the decline, The stock may feel a bit slim in the forend to some. [Same stock as the mountain rifle]

Regards, Eagleye.

for that money, you could get a pair of Stevens 200's and a pair of decent scopes. they are the same as the Savage 110, have proved to be very accurate, and for scopes you can't go wrong with a fixed power Weaver.

it will be an all around rifle for mostly moose, deer, bear but occasionally elk and whatever else i may get the urge to tip over!

Kevin, I handled the stevens 200 and just did not like the feel of the stock, just felt kind of flimsy and plastic to me, allthough I have heard good things about the accuracy of those rifles.

Looks like Remmy is off to an early lead!
Thanks for the replies so far!
Chris

I would choose a Tikka T3 Hunter with wood stock. It has all the features you are looking for, including a detachable magazine and is guaranteed to be accurate.

Second choice would be the Vanguard, but not the sub-MOA. People with experience have been saying that any Vanguard with the right ammo will likely be sub-MOA. My brother had one about 10 years ago and it was sub-MOA with Federal Premium 180gr Partitions. Downside is no detachable magazine.

you have a grand , get yer butt up here we have 2 full days left of bow season for bulls and they started rutting thismorning , I had to come in and dry off but seen 5 bulls in a hour

I take issue with the "guaranteed to be accurate" statement, since even the T3 has some bad eggs in the basket, like one that would not make 2 MOA with anything tried. EE

Tikka = D'oh! Look at all these shortcuts! I wish I had bought a Sako...

For the best bang for your buck, get a used Remington or early commercial FN Mauser (around $500) in the caliber of your choice and spend all the change up to $1000 on optics where it will make a much bigger difference.

For the extra $500 you could get a used Leupold 2.5-8 VXIII

Winchester Model 70 Classic Sporter in 30-06

Good heft, ~ 7 1/2 pounds dry.

24" barrel for great balance for off-hand shooting.

Good , easily adjustable trigger.

CRF, if that appeals to you.

Cost of under a thousand bucks, $770.00 + tax from most mail-order dealers.

If you get down to McLeese in the near future you can try mine on for size.

I was in the same position as you not too long ago and i was fondling various makes and models of bolt guns.
Being of Finnish desent i have always been partial to Sako's And Tikka's, but i was trying my best to keep an open mind as i shopped.
I found that for me, the Tikka T3 is too narrow in the pistol grip for my hands and i also found that the bolt dosent cycle as smoothly as i am use to or comfortable with. IE. from a fired chamber opening the action is,...more difficult than i like, Slam if you must!!.
On the pro side i have yet to hear a complaint about the inherant accuracy of these rifles althoe the synthetic stocked model will be lighter than you have said you prefer.
The Sako's while excellent in every way are out of both your and my price range!
The remington's i tried out had gritty triggers, which could easly be rectified and they were quite comfortable to shoulder and handle.
I was also leery of the quality reputation i have been seeing in the barrels, but the 2 split barrels i have seen were both stainless so it may be fine in a blued model.
I have various unfounded prejudices against the browning a-bolt that are not worth getting into.
Didnt mind the ruger all that much but it didnt really wow me at all either. What I ended up buying was a new in the box old model tikka 595. If you can find one it is a very fine rifle. it cost 700 bucks, and has the exact same feel as the sako did to me. The palm swell fills my hand nice and and the trigger is crisp and smooth! It feeds from a detatcable magazine that holds 3 rounds and the action almost cycles itself. The stock is dencer and heavier than the T3's is.
There is no accuracy garantee however and mine has been somwhat choosy on the ammo it will shoot MOA.
Thats my 2cents hope it helps.

walnut/blued Weatherby Vanguard in 30-06 $600 +/-.....
Weatherby (Talley) one piece rings $50
Leupold VX-1 3-9X matte.....I dunno...about $300 +/-....

That's pretty close to your budget....
