I would recommend you buy a new Remington 700 CDL in 30-06
Or .270 or whatever other caliber blows yer hair back :D

Then take it to the smith and have him tweek it for accuracy including a good bedding job. Throw on a nice pair of "dual dovetail" mounts and a Leupold or 3200 in 3x9 and your set :D

Walnut Tikka T3 would be a very close second

I recently bought a Tikka (nib) m695 in 300WM and then some Tikka Optiloks (used briefly and look new, as promised! I can't tell!) and then a Bushnell Elite 3200 (3x9-40)(used, but like new, with some slight ring marks, but the optics are perfect) for just over a grand. I think altogether it ended up $1070.00 shipped. Not bad, imo. All purchases made from fellow CGN'ers at this site.

Pros: Excellent recoil Pad, Ergonomically pleasing, No "Wart" [safety lock], 24" barrel, Matte finish, easily adjusted trigger, price well within your criteria.

Cons: Some feel that Remington Quality is on the decline, The stock may feel a bit slim in the forend to some. [Same stock as the mountain rifle]

Regards, Eagleye.

troutseeker - the rifle I am looking to replace is a cooey/winchester model 70 in .270 win. My father hunted with this rifle for 20 years and i have hunted with it for close to that as well. It has always shot cloverleaf groups until this year, now for some reason my groups have ballooned out to 4-5". Have tried a bucnh of things but nothing is working so what I am going to do is send it to a good smith to see what he can do with it, then it will be put away for my son when he is old enough.......thus i need a new boomstick!

I'm leaning quite heavily toward the rem 700cdl, sending it directly to the smith to be bedded and tweaked and have a clip conversion done. throw on a nice 3-9X and i'll be set for the next 20 years!

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Nice to hear the old gal will see new life and get your son started! It's hard to go wrong with a Remington 700... They shoot pretty good out of the box and you'll have yourself another 40 year rifle with one of these.

I NEVER thought I would say this, but have a look at the new Savage 116, they have a real nice laminated wood stock, well made detachable mag, accu trigger, and they really shoot well. I do not impress easily, but these guns are sweet.
The problem here is that they are real hard to find right now, but are WELL under the $1000.00 mark. And no I don't own 1
Other option would be the Rem 700, this has been covered by others.

Not many have seen the new 116s with laminated stocks and detachable mags, Ithe 1 I saw was at the dealer show this spring, and was totally impressed with it, certainly Savage has come ahead in the quality dept, and now it appears they are making a NICE looking gun as well. I think they will sell well, Savages have always shot well, but many of us do not want an ugly gun, they seem to have paid attention

Harley rider huh? Dude you already have a great rifle if it was shooting 'leafs and then went south all of a sudden. Take it to a smith and have a look at your scope, mounts etc.

The Tikka is nice but I find the T3 synthetic stock is a little "junky" feeling......maybe a walnut stock like "1899" suggested would be better .

They are accurate well built and have a detach mag. And the price is reasonable too.
