1000 yard calibers.

I like the .270 personally, but like the .250 it fits in between other great calibres and really never took off as a 1000yds cartridge. Time may change that if somebody starts winning everything in sight with it. Sierra makes some match bullets for it.

Just get a guy like David Tubbs to start shooting it and telling everyone it's the best thing since sliced bread and you have a winner.

Has anybody heard anything about the precision performance of the 6.8mm SPC? It's .270

kell2784, I shoot a 7 Mystic which is my version of the 280AI. I very much like it. Does the same thing the 7RSAUM does.

If the barrel is up to it, sub MOA at 1km with the AMax is no issue. About to test some 180gr Bergers. There is growing interest in the 7mm for F(O) now that there is a tangible ballistic benefit in the 180gr Bergers.

Aussies shoot a 284 in F class (more coming in the US and UK) and some 1KM BR shooters in the UK use the 7WSM and have set some national records. No where near as popular as the 30's and 6.5's but that has more to do with viable bullets and recoil then performance.

For F class, 2007 will be a telling year. There is no doubt that ballistics are a smidge better with the fast 7mm but recoil is also substantially higher. As is barrel heat. Will it matter in real world comp? Time will tell.

Personally, for 600 and out, my 6.5 Mystic will do all that I can want and any extra ballistics will be lost due to shooting fatigue.

Obtunded, the 6.8SPC may very well end up as an unloved orphan. For a short range F class cartridge, it really will not keep up with the likes of the 6BR and even the 223. For a LR BR, case is way too small with no viable bullets. The 115gr MK is not bad for getting bad guys but will not stand up to match shooting in the wind.

For that type of bullet weight, I would go 30 BR and have some amazing bullets. In a larger case 6mm, the 115gr will run circles around the SPC. The SPC might just make a great 6mm case?????

I don't even think you can shoot it in service rifle as it is not adopted yet.

Not something I would spend much time with right now. A better bet would be the 6.5 Grendel or BR. Some have even shot the 7Br with 120gr BT with excellent results.

I agree with mysticplayer, the 6.8mm SPC is just to small for a case to do it any justice when there are much better choices. I read that it was designed for the M4 carbine and reminds me of the .30 Whisper case.

I know nothing about the cartridge except the yanks are rechambering some of their rifles in order to accept the round. (The shortcomings of the 5.56 coming home to roost).

There are so many 6 and 6.5 cartridges out there to keep me entertained for the rest of my days. When I can shoot better than the bullets can, I will feel bold enough to move-on.

Mystic

could you provide a little more background on the 7mm Mystic. I have been seriously looking at the 7mm RSAUM but have some reservations about brass availability.

Thanks

Trevor60, the 7 mystic is my version of the 280AI. The difference is that neck sizing and seating are done using 7RM dies. If you look at a load manual with cartridge diagram, you will see the differences in shoulder location.

Shares the same 40deg shoulder and body taper. Just the shoulder is moved forward slightly.

Now that there is reasonably priced 280AI dies from Lee, this wildcat isn't as cost effective as when I made it to use 7RM dies. I love the Lee collet die which I use to neck size my brass.

You use 280AI load data to work up. You can also cross reference with the 7RSAUM to give you an indication of performance at elevated pressures. Case volumes are very similar.

In my 24" Shilen, I can push 162gr Amax to 2900/2950fps. A toasty load but within the range of a magnum case.

I am presently using Fed GM 30-06 brass but will likely switch to Win when this stuff wears out.

1000 yards cal.

an option for 7mm (or other cals) is the Broughton 5C canted rifling barrels. I have one on my 7mmSTW with a 9 inch twist. I was very impressed with the Broughton which is 300$ US and very accurate. It shoots the 162 Amax and 180 VLDs very well. I even heard of a 200 gr. bullet being made now.
(3 shots at 100 yds in 1/3 MOA, 162gr Amax moly w/81 gr. H1000, rifle is an Abolt, barrel is magnum sporter 27 ½ in. I use Redding comp dies. fire formed cases. I use .001 run-out bullets or better for these tests)

I shoot some Kriegers as well and at this time I cannot say if the Broughtons or the Kriegers are the better of the two. It is said that the canted rifling helps give a little extra mv. I have had good success with a gaillard bull barrel in 260 Rem.

I'm going to get a Broughton for my next Rem 700 .308 barrel. My present Madoco (australian) is around 3500 rds.

Hey Jerry, you mentioned that it would be nice if someone made a extended mag for the center feed Savages. Well these guy make them for the 308 type cals and are going to add the 223, and 30-06 cals soon. I have not tried them but someone here must have.

Well...here a thought

Remove brake for competition but suggest keeping it on for practice.
100mm Earshplittenloudenboomer.
Barrel life is not the greatest as it comes with 2 spare barrels when new.
