1000 yard F Class Shooter- .260 or 6.5 x 284 ?

Jerry

I have read about your Mystic and like your idea. I have a straight 260 now.

It has a 30" broughton and with the Lapua 139's and RL-22 i am getting 2950fps comfortably. Can get over 3000fps but accuracy stinks and pressure is their. I want to try some 142's or Bob Cauterucio's 141's. They have a shorter bearing surface than the 139's and in theory should be able to push them as fast if not faster with less pressure or same pressure. But that is gonna wait for awhile. I just started working with Bob's 120gr vld and my load is 1/2 moa at 200 with speeds close to 3200fps. Bob's 120gr vld is reporting a B.C. of .595. After running numbers i may not even look at the 140 class bullets. Hopefully if weather holds out i can try the 120's a little further out.

I use to neck down Lapua 308 brass but have a minimum spec chamber and had to neck turn. Hate that so i am using remington 260 brass.

I think the one thing that has held the 260 out of main stream is brass. Seems like Remingtons brass quality is coming around but i am not an anal reloader or a nitpicky shooter. I would rather be shooting than sorting.

The 6.5 Mystic certainly has been a fun project. Not very often there is a wildcat not already done up.

Depending on the rifle, the 260 reg. and AI will match the performance of the Mystic. However, at elevated pressures. Still it does offer a slightly larger case capacity and it is different. If you have a slow lot of H4831SC, the extra space will solve overly compressed loads.

Wow, 120gr with that type of performance is very exciting indeed. Great that new and exciting innovations are coming fast and furious.

Do you think a standard Rem 700 heavy barrel in 6mm remington would be useable for this sort of long distance shooting? Ive had one for ages, and use factory if I can ever find any... Was wondering about taking it out to a long range soon. WOrthwhile? Or is 6mm Rem basically a 750 cartridge max?

The standard Remington twist in a 700 is 1-9¼" It will stabilize the 95 Berger and the 90 Lapua out to 1000, but I had poor results with the 105 Berger and the 105 Lapua as well as the 107 Sierra in the standard twist. I am now using a 1-8 for these longer bullets and it works well. The general consensus is that the slowest twist that will stabilize the 105-107 gr 6mm VLD type bullets out that far is 1-8½" You could try the 90-95 grain VLD's though, you might be amazed as to what they can do at long range. Regards, Eagleye.

thanks...ill try it out...I really have to get started making my own loads..I almost never shoot my 6mm anymore..cause its very hard to find factory ammo these days for it..

For our F Class shoots at 700, 800 , 900 and 1000 yards, why must I have to burn up a barrel and lots of powder for a 6.5 x 284 ?

Hungry, since you're hungry to try F class, but don't feel the 6.5x284 is the ticket, try the 284 Win. Same bolt face, more barrel life, just need 2800-2900fps to make the Sierra MK 175 work at 1K, handles tailwinds better than the 6.5's, handles crosswinds the same as the 6.5. The downside...recoil management. Apparently the South Africans, and the Aussies are trying the 7mm with some success.
