1000 Yard Shooter

1000 yd shooters

I've only been out to 1000 2-3 times but i've not noticed a .308 on the line back there yet, I'm sure it happens but i've seen mostly .338's, 6.5-284's, win. short mags, win mag's 7mm mags. etc.
I've shot my .50 back at 1000 and it works well and it can shoot damn accurate from back there but the prob. with that is it's loud, it's disruptive to the other shooters and you tend to kick up a lot of dust and debris that always seems to blow over and land on the other guys,,,,, snicker,,,,, they don't really like that alot. They send you down to the other end of the firing line with your buddy and his .338 Lapua Magnum
I've got a 6mm BR just put together for this year for reaching out from 1000 we,ll see how it works it's got a 30" 1-8 barrell built for SMK's @ 107 gr.

The .50 is not really that accurate. It was developed to destroy targets at long range. Not precision shooting.

Longest Distance Kill

A Canadian sniper in Afghanistan made the longest recorded kill in history with this weapon. On a March afternoon in 2002, Corporal Rob Furlong of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) squinted through the scope of his McMillan TAC-50 and successfully killed an enemy combatant from 2,430 meters (2,657 yd/1.509 miles) with 750 grain Hornady A-MAX very-low-drag bullets.[1] It was—and still is—the longest-ever recorded kill by a sniper in combat, surpassing the mark of 2,250 meters set by U.S. Marine Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock during the Vietnam War.[2]

This impressive feat of marksmanship is not typical for the effective range with a high first-hit probability of the employed rifle (see Sniper rifle: maximum effective range). Corporal Furlong's first shot was a miss, while the second one had hit the insurgent's backpack. The third struck the insurgent's torso.[2] The ambient air density in the Shah-i-Kot Valley where Corporal Furlong operated is significantly lower than at sea level due to its 2,432 meters (9,000 feet) mean elevation. This increases the maximum effective range of a high-powered sniper rifle like Corporal Furlong used by about 600 meters (1968 feet).

Those guys in the funny looking shooting jackets with the iron sighted rifles on the 1000 yard line are shooting .308 or .223. The Mon Club Championship TR class was won this year by a guy shooting a .223.
