1000 Yard Steel Challenge - Match Series 2025 @ CFB Borden
This series is for those that want to shoot steel targets at 1000 yards. Nothing is quite like the sound of ringing a steel target.
All the matches last year sold out immediately and everyone really enjoyed them.

This year the 1000 Yard Steel Challenge is now a Championship. (Best 2 scores of 3 matches).

If you have an interest to shoot any of these, for the first event I am running a 1000 Yard Steel Challenge - Training + Practise Match.
Only the Training & Practise Match is open on Practiscore so far, but the 3 Match dates will be approved soon and then opened on Practiscore.

Would the practice session be good for someone like myself who is new to long range shooting? I have some experience out to 300 yds but that is all. And this is fairly close to me geographically.

I can tell you with the utmost sincerity that if you can hold around 1MOA at 100 yards, and your rifle and gear are up to it ( twist and ammo, etc) and equipped with a "decent" scope and 20MOA rail , with very little help oypu will be able to make the trip to 1,000 meters- we regularly help fellas do it in one session at our range 🙂

HI All the way around,

Thank you for your email.
Unless you have been shooting at 1000 yards and have the right equipment and exprience shooting the 1000 Yard Steel Challenge is not a good fit for you. Although I have taught people who after a couple of courses are capable of shooting that event.

We run excellent courses for Long Range Shooting, and I suggest at least parts 1 and 2 before going to 1000 yards as the targets are pretty small. It's a dense subject. I would be happy to help you with courses if you have an interest.

I will be running these courses this year at CFB Borden....

Please visit Practiscore for these Courses:

Long Range Rifle Fundamentals Course - Part 1 (10 + 11 May)

Long Range Rifle Fundamentals Course - Part 2 - 200-500 Yards (14-15 June)

https://practiscore.com/long-range-rifle-fundamentals-course-part-2-7-8-june/register

Long Range Rifle Fundamentals Course - Part 3 - 600-1000 Yards (30-31 Aug)

https://practiscore.com/long-range-...urse-part-3-600-1000-yards-30-31-aug/register

Please let me know if I can help with any questions after looking at these courses.

Thank you
Coach Sammy

Thanks for your response. I appreciate your honesty. I would be more interested in the courses but unfortunately the Part 1 date won't work for me this year. I have a Ruger Precision in 6.5 so equipment-wise I think I would be okay. I have access to a 400 yd spot I can shoot at so perhaps I will get somewhat proficient at that and revisit this next year. But good to know something like this is available relatively nearby.

Hi,
You are very welcome.
I like to teach people how to shoot so they can go do it on their own with proficiency, if I just help you get in target you learn very little.
Long Range shooting is a dense subject to have the ability and learn the skills.

My suggestion is to learn to shoot very small groups at 100 yards, and not waste too much time at longer distances. Yeah sure it's fun, but to build the experience and skill you need your fundamentals totally ingrained, and 100 yards is a distance where wind does not have much effect and there are no secondary effects. This means that your feedback from the target is good data.

Look up the fundamentals of long range shooting and start implementing them. If your learn bad habits, its very hard as a coach to undo them.
If I hold a 2nd version of the Part 1 Course this year, I will let you know.

You can also send me you name and email address and I can put you on the announcement list for courses and events.

This series is for those that want to shoot steel targets at 1000 yards. Nothing is quite like the sound of ringing a steel target 1.5 secs after you fire. "

Actually the bullet takes 1.5 seconds to impact...Then the impact sound takes another 2.6 sec to return to the shooter for a total of 4.1 seconds from trigger pull to hearing the impact...Like you say nothing quite like that far off delayed sound of success.

When I first shot and hit a gong at 1000 yards I figured I had missed...Again... but was completely blown away when what seemed like forever I heard the faint goooong...HA.

Yes, the sound starts 1.5 Secs after you fire, the time it takes to hear somewhat depends on environmental conditions. Wind blowing toward you, wind blowing away from etc.
