New to the Pistol Caliber Carbine. I just ran down to my local dealer to purchase a 9mm Thureon Defence Carbine to find that they had recently sold their last one. All they have left are 10mm, 40 & 45. Anyone have any input on to witch would be best suited for what I'm looking for? Basically I'm just wanting to do some plinking, Maybe shoot some gophers and other vermint. Probably out to 100 meters. Any one have either of these Carbines? If so what kind of groupings are you getting at 100 meters? I don't really mean find the hold over to know where the bullet is going but more aim the cross hairs on the dot and shoot. Thanks for the input and sorry for being such a newbie :)

Out to 100 yards the 45 is fine. I found the 9mm to be slightly more accurate at that range but it may have been less effective. The Thureon is a great gun and is surprising accurate. I loved both my 9mm and 45... sadly they had to go to fund other projects.

10mm ammo is hard to find and not any better than the others IMO, 40 is a fine choice but why bother when you could have a 45? Ideally, id say go with the 9mm, but in its absence the 45 is a good choice.

I was getting 2moa groups at 100 yards with my 45 and a good optic. Off a bench. A better trigger would help (thereon takes standard AR triggers). 100 meters is the MAX id want to rely on this gun though. Any farther and you really do want to go with a rifle round IMO.

I would love to have one in 10mm... I have heard good things about Thureon Defence. Either of them would be great to shoot though.

10mm is by a huge margin your best option out of what's left and being mentioned. Check out http://www.ballistics101.com/ to see how much better performing it is than the others.

Even the weakest loads you can buy for it ($30 for 50 rounds) are as strong as the strongest ammo you can get for the others. Get some high-performance ammo, or reload yourself, and you're bordering in rifle performance.

Heck, numerous people can get reliable and consistent shots out of a pistol with a 10mm from 100.

I have a TD in 9mm and its a great gun.
Don't waste your money on a JR - they are "OK" but no where near the TD, especially for the money.
Been wanting to trade my 9mm in for a 45 as I have a large supply of 45 and very little 9mm.
If you are interested, PM me.

I just bought one this week in 45. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. I'm impressed with the quality, very well built. I went with 45 because I'm already set up to reload for that caliber. I would have went with 10mm otherwise, I can reload. If I didn't reload then 9mm would be my choice.

10mm is by far the most powerful of the choices but also the most expensive to shoot. I own a 10mm pistol and reload for it, losing brass sucks.
I would go with 45, it's easy to find ammo for, easy to reload for and components are cheap.
10mm would make a good deer rifle for 100yd shots but is a little overkill for varmint hunting.
Do some research and you'll quickly find out what the differences are. I love my 10mm but it doesn't get shot much because of the cost and fact that making holes in paper is just as easy with my 9mm or 45auto for a lot less money.
In a non restricted carbine it would be awesome though :)

If you go with 10mm and aren't going to reload pm me and we can make an arrangement for me to buy any brass you happen to pick up :)

it should be the same caliber your pistol takes...
at 100 meters, these pistol rounds arc like basketball throws :)
If you want to just wing stuff around, get the 9mm, its cheap as dirt and will kill a gopher just the same.

Pavementsurfer's experience with 10mm is probably based on commercial ammo, and current ammo is not up to what 10mm is capable of. To get the proper benefit from this awesome cartridge you do need to reload. Otherwise it is basically expensive .40 Short and Weak. However, if you load, Budget currrently has new Starline brass, which is probably the best you can get, in stock. Out of my Glock 20 I can ring the 200 yard gong fairly consistantly. My performance with 9mm is no where near, it's more like shooting a mortar at that range.... And remember... Nine is fine, but Ten is for men.

Don't even bother getting a 10mm unless you reload... That AE ammo is decaf breakfast blend with skim milk an 2 sweet an low... Stuff a 200gr XTP over a heaping helping of VV 3N38 an you got a double espresso with a tequila chaser er drop a 155gr over a whole pile of Power Pistol if you wanna see small critters turn into pink mist....

I got a S2K in 9mm, dunno what some of you are talking about "lobbing" chit out to 100M? Can't be accurate? I used to pick clays off the 100 backstop with a TP9 an irons... Baseball size rocks out to 150M 3 out of 5 shots with a nice dust "poof"... When I get the quad rail locked down on the S2K iv got a date with steel out to 400M or till I can't see the target past the tip of the barrel thru my scope.

Last choice would be a .45... That caliber dosent get interesting to me till yer chuckin 405gr+ pills north of 2000fps.

IMO .40 would be the best choice if you can't wait for the 9mm. It's the cheapest to get factory ammo for (after 9mm), ammo is easy to find, and magazines are easier to find.

OUCH!!! I run 405gr from my Marlin 45-70 and about 1800fps is where they start to get uncomfortable. What are you doing 2000+ with and what kind of accuracy is that giving you? I found the best accuracy to be at around 1700fps
