10mm carbine velocity

Just curious what velocity people are getting with handloads out of carbine length barrels? I chrono’d 180 grain Winchester white box target loads out of my 18.6” barrel at 1230-ish FPS, pretty anemic in my mind. I want to load 180 grain XTP’s or Gold Dots for 100 yard bush hunting, but would really like to see 1500 FPS. Am I looking at bullets that are too heavy for said velocity? I know some guys have been getting 2200 FPS with 135’s, but I would prefer heavier bullets.

Yikes, my target fodder 10mm out of a pistol is faster than that Winchester. 11 grains of Blue Dot or 9.5 grains of Longshot will produce a bit under 1700fps from an 18.5" barrel with those 180JHPs. I think it was about 1680avg with Longshot but I'm too lazy to find it. I really don't recommend that certain 135JHP load as well. It has gone squirrelly on me a couple times throughout the years and Hodgdon themselves say it's no longer safe.

1680 FPS sounds like a real deer hammer with proper slugs. I’ve been reading that Longshot is a good, easy metering powder, so I’m looking into using it. Which hollow points tend to be for punching paper and which ones for legitimate hunting work?

I don't often use JHPs for target shooting but I do load a lot of them. The XTP is probably my favourite due to the cost and performance. I think anything you use is going to pull itself apart quickly once it hits but should be fine for deer. Noslers are by far the worst but they tend to be pretty cheap. Jacket separation is common and so is failure to expand. Lot to lot consistency is a bit off too. Some times they put the jacket notches in place, some times not.

200 gr noslers and long shot powder shot well together for me.. 1600ish to 1650 was accurate.
Barns 155 also grouped well.. 2 inch @ 100 yards ..
Rifle didnt like anything under 150 gr jacketed bullet..
What rifle are you shooting?

Almost all my chronographing was down with a Thureon Defense rifle or a TNW ASR. I'm impressed with the speeds you got with a 200grn bullet. I tried 800-x and AA9 but couldn't break 1500fps. I think 1450ish was the best I could do while staying somewhat close to published data I had.

When the TD rifles were first coming out I had a chance to work directly with them through email on some changes they ended up making and keeping. They would send me the upgraded parts and I tried them out. I had 3 of the rifles at one point. A lucky buyer of one of them got the extra parts in the deal. I learned a ton from it, very interesting times.

I am loading 40 S&W with 5.0gr of universal under 180gr Hornady XTP's and 180gr hollow point Cam Pro's. I shot both bullets though a 1 gallon jug of water in to a stack of 2x12's at 25yds. Both bullets penetrated about 2" of lumber after passing through the water jug. The XTP expanded nicely and stayed intact (still weighs 180gr too). The Cam Pro is apparently not intended to expand, but it did fragment, I would not hesitate to use it as a varmint bullet if it is legal where you are. They both shoot to the same point of impact and pretty accurate as well. This is out of a JR carbine.

Correction..mixed up my bullet weights. Gave speeds on 135.
200 gr noslers @ 1400 to 1475. With long shot powder

Hodgdon 2017 annual manual listed 8.2 as max. With long shot in a Remington case..
In star line brass and federal brass, its was to hot. Max for me in my T.D. rifle was 8 & 8.1..
7.4 & 7.6 shot best COAL. 1.260 book lenght..
Hornady Xtp and the nosler bullets didnt change pressures just P.O.I. was higher and to the right..
Try to find some barns X tac bullets.. I'm thinking on trying them for deer at close range

I load 200grn XTP and Noslers with 8grns of Longshot, 1.260" and I use a mild primer like a CCI 300 or Murom. They are pushing close to 1250fps from a 5" but I never did chrono any from a rifle. I remember the AA9 loads I used to run would penetrate like crazy despite being a JHP.
