Hi Guys another of my dumb questions but I have to learn. Can anyone tell me the difference in the pressure of a 10mm and the .40S&W. In other words
would it be possible to use 10mm in a Beretta .40S&W or is the 10mm to high a pressure?

SAAMI maximum pressure for the 10mm is 37,500 psi compared with 35,000 psi for the .40 S&W. The pressure isn't much higher, but 10mm requires large-framed guns (much like .45 ACP) to accommodate its increased length. The higher recoil impulse would also accelerate wear on guns that aren't designed to handle it.

10mm Auto is substantially longer and will not chamber in a .40S&W.

10mm Auto:
COL - 1.260"
Case Length - 0.992"

.40S&W:
COL - 1.135"
Case Length - 0.850"

Mark

This is true.

In reverse, it is often possible to shoot .40 S&W in a pistol chambered for 10mm. However, this is NOT a recommended pratice. Here's a link to a good article that explains why:

As above, don't confuse peak pressure with velocity. There is basically no difference in the working pressures between the 10mm and 40 S&W.

However since the 10mm is longer, it can be stuffed with much more, slower burning powder.

10mm is a very unique caliber and has it follow up, but for me .40SW is a way to go.
It is cheaper and plentiful and makes the same paper hole like 10mm

I used to shoot a few 40's in my 10mm's I have now purchased 40S&W barrels and swap them when I want to shoot cheaper more available 40S&W.

I will admit to shooting a few .40's in a Colt Delta and a S&W 1066 I owned previously will no apparent ill effect. Then I discovered that Gunzone article and abandoned the process.

I did have Gunnar @ Armco fit a .40 S&W to one of my current Colt Deltas, though....

Best of both worlds as there is plenty of free .40 S&W brass in these parts left behind at the local ranges after the cops practice.
