Well had my young fellow out with his Mossberg youth 20 gauge last weekend for his first try and some flying targets and we are going again tomorrow.
Getting him used to standing properly and turning his body in towards the thrower, will try having him get used to having both eyes open.
He is anxious to grow into the 20 gauge Beretta we have in the safe. Bought him a Browning vest today at P&D. Really looking forward to his 2nd try. FS

As for two eyed shooting, I'll caution you that not everyone can shoot that way, no matter how hard they try. I am exactly like that. I see either 2 beads or two birds.

If he can shoot 2 eyes without assistance, that is fantastic, but a small piece of tape on the glasses to block out the 'off eye' looking down the barrel is a very good alternative.

Well the Targets were quite a lot more challenging this time around and as a result he missed a lot more this time out. Didn't bother with the 2 eye training, I think we'll leave that for a while. Mom even came and watched. FS

There a few guys around Edmonton and Calgary that have been to the various training centers in the USA and have their level II and III training cert.
Steve Lockham Sr is in Edmonton. My son will be spending some time with him when this damn snow melts. FS

We have tried some incomers, L to R, some high going away, quartering incomers. The field only has 5 throwers set up right now. Plus the guy who's field we are shooting is a master class shooter so targets can be quite a challenge. FS

I have a bud with 3 children, and this fellow is an avid dog trainer and bird hunter. 2 years ago he buys a Cricket for his then 5yr old boy, but from I can figure out, never showed him how to shoot it?? WTF I say to him last May as we were talking the boys gopher shooting, his boy has no clue how to hold a rifle or sqeeze the trigger, like it was his very first time. Now if the child isn't in to it then sure but he seemed like he wanted to shoot a gopher pretty bad to me.
My guy has had all kinds of Soft airs then pellet rifle and still shoots them from time to time and this fellow has done a fine job with his wife's rifle skills, but nothing so far with his kids. FS

You are lucky to have a place to shoot. It does sound like the targets are a bit challenging. You did mention that this was the first time time for flying targets. Mr. Lockham is a top notch certified instructor. Until the young fellow gets some formal training why not take him to a skeet range and start him on some fluffy targets? Low seven is a good place to start then maybe low one. These targets are among the easiest targets to hit, but one has to learn good form or they can fly away untouched. I think that the young fellow may enjoy a challenge, but for now scoring and total destruction of targets will be more fun and give him more confidence.

You are right and if we still didn't have 3 feet of snow on the ground I could get him out to the skeet field they built last year out at Beaverhills. I think there are still some manual cockers at Spruce Grove range, maybe I'll put him beside them for a few boxes of ammo. FS
 
Thanks for the tips Fassteel. My boy has been shooting for 4 years now and he is 9 now. He went out the last two years gopher shooting and I have that stuff down pat with him but I am very weak at shotgunning but would like him to try to learn from a professional.

Gun change

Well the little man has decided to hit the safe and try some of the other 20 gauge shotguns we have.
Last weekend he tried out the semi auto Tecknys and it fit him not too badly,but did not break as many as he had done with his shorter barreled pump. Mind you the targets were much tougher.
So today after the dentist there wasn't much point in going back to school when we could be shooting sporting clays instead.
He had asked his cousin a few years older what his favorite shotgun to shoot was and it was the over and under. So Lucas says he'd like to try my limited edition, colour case Silver Pigeon C, and I'm thinking swinging an O/U for the first time is going to be difficult for him.
Boy was I ever wrong, he hit his first 3 in a row, a single then a pair at the 5 stand.
There was a tower 1/4ing r to l away bird and with the 20 gauge he that that bird today better than all the other shooter with the exception of the 2 master class guys, the last one had to have been all of 40 yards, or more I couldn't believe he hit it and hard.
The boys were really giving it to me every time he broke a pair, and it was great to see him shoot so well. FS
