Hi everyone i will be starting hunting this year for deer and moose and i was wondering witch rifle should i choose, i am limited in my budget but it came down to those two rifles:

Savage 111 FCXP3 in .270 or
Remington 700 SPS DM in .270

and if you guys can suggest a rifle that is under 600$ and i want bolt action and detachable Mag.

Cheers thanks.

Either one would work fine. It is a Ford/Chev kind of question. I like the Remingtons better because of the plethora of parts and accessories available. That said, the last Remington product I bought (870) was a PoS, and the last model 7 my Dad bought had a chamber so rough it wouldn't extract fired cases. On the flip side, my late 80s vintage 700 is a tackdriver.
If you are going to leave it stock, I would probably go Savage with an acutrigger. If you feel the need to tinker, get the Remington. Also don't rule out used guns - sometimes you can get a gem for a bargain.

I've had four Savage guns within the last 5-6 years. (all bought new) and all with the accutrigger. I'll be damned if they weren't the best guns I've ever had "out of the box". Better than any Browning, Remington,Winchester , or Ruger. But, they had issues that kind of turned me off. 3 of the 4 had super tight magazines that , if not pushed SUPER HARD, and absolutely correctly.........rear first, then click the front in..........the mags would pop out during recoil, and always land upside down and dent the next round in the mag.
Plus the distance between the scope bases is so much farther than it needs to be, you have to seriously consider the type of scope you get. I couldn't get a Bushnell 3200, A Redfield, A Leupold VX1, or a Burris fullfield II to fit without at least one extension ring. And even then, it left about 1 or 2 millimeters of play for your eye relief. You need a scope with lots of center tube if you need any movement of the eye piece for your own personal eye-relief setting.
I ended up using TWO extension rings , plus having to grind out a V-shape in one of the bases of the scope ring to get a comfortable setting. Its just something to consider.
With all the current complaints I read about the Remington products, you might want to steer clear of them too. Keep a lookout for a decent used gun. I have probably bought around 140 or more guns in my adulthood, and I'd have to say, 90% of them were used. And of that 90%, I had problems with maybe 5% of my purchases. You can often get a used Humvee for the price of a new Cavalier, and I'm damn sure a hummer can get you further in the back country. Oftentimes you can pick up a well cared for gun, made in a time that everything was done by hand, that will last a lifetime, and shoot the lights out on the EE, for less than a current, well-flawed , offering at the mid-price level from a gun store.

Rem 700 would be my choice of the 2, but I would look around for a used BDL DM over the sps version.

If you do go savage, check out the regular 111 classic rifles, not the package deal with the old style mag and no accutrigger.

Try to find a gun shop(s) that has an example of each and handle them to see how they feel. If they don't fit you well, you won't shoot them to their full potential, so if the gun doesn't feel right, don't buy it.

I'm biased a bit in favour of Savage, and a bit more against Remington, but the 700 is a benchmark design and unless you get a lemon, it's a very good hunting rifle that should last a life time, just like the Savage. And it is a long running design with lots of aftermarket accessories and upgrades available. Just like the Savage.

Savage's Accutrigger is a nice feature, but if money is that tight, don't rule out the scoped package 111 with a conventional trigger. That's still an inherently accurate design and the trigger is adjustable, just not as easy for the user to adjust. You can get a gunsmith to do it for not a lot of money.

Either, or...

I could make do with either rifle.

NAA.

sgt.rock,
would not a picatinny rail have solved your scope mount issues. I've not had any probs mounting a scope on my 4 savages.

OP,
The savage package gun you mention is a decent rifle. I have one and the scope has not let me down yet. Those standard triggers are OK for a hunting rifle too. I personally would change the scope out though. Those scopes are fine for shooting paper at the range. But I would not leave reliability to chance for something as important as hunting.

Chevy/Ford type of question. For looks I think the Remington is a nicer action but I find the SPS's to be cheap (not inexpensive). Savage is a utilitarian looking action but I have never had a problem with any of the ones I've owned. Both can be accurate, I would venture to say the Savage is a little more consistant rifle to rifle but some might disagree.

The TC Venture or Howa/Vangaurd would also be comparible options.

If you didn't mind my bias response I would say Savage.

I would chose the Savage, if good looks are wanted, you can get the Classic model. I personally won't buy new anymore, it's like driving a new car off the lot. A few safe kisses, a scratch or two, blueing wear will happen to all rifles used for what their made for. If one isn't sure how to buy used get some knowledgeable help.

Funny, I have the same question but am looking for a 300 WM. I have the exact same Savage rifle as you are asking about in 270 win which was bought about 3 or 4 seasons ago. It is great. I flipped out the scope to a 3x9-50. Trigger works fine w/o Accutrigger. I had a similar issue with magazine, but over the last couple of years it works perfectly now, i think it had to be worn in a bit to fit nicely so no complaints at all, price is right, accuracy is better than I am capable of.

Both can be equiped with good stocks (more options for rem), detachable mag options (more for rem) and prefit barrels using a barrel nut (mcgowen and bergara for rem and a bunch for savage).

One big thing is the design of the savage basically eliminates the need for blue printing and recent remington's are hit and miss but generally questionable when it comes to machining quality.

Savage! Remington's stuff is being made in some place like Kazakhstan(Borat's uncle owns the factory) and I've heard the quality is poor. Some of the other posters have mentioned that used may be a better way to go. Savage has been producing decent budget hunting rifles, but don't be afraid to check out the EE.

If you're buying new get the savage (with the accutrigger, very nice) If you're willing to look used get an older 700 before all the quality control issues appeared.

I have a 111 and Ive tried a 700. My cheap $400 savage is much better than the 800 dollar remington I tried. Better accuracy, smoother bolt and even the non accutrigger was better than the remington.

The one piece remington bolt can cause some pretty serious issues compared to the worry free floating bolt head of the savage design.
