Typically, what Bubba Work, Welding, and Machining was done to convert a 12.2 to 12.3? Sear?

How many were wrecked and FUBAR'd by Bubba trying to accomplish the task?

Who dreamed up 12.2 to 12.3 and in what year?

Will 12.3 ever be back?

CA hit the market post 1978 in response to the FA prohibition enacted with Bill C51 (the same one that gave us the FAC and the sub 18.5 barrel semi auto centre fire restriction).

Conversion work was specific to the particular mechanism, the criteria being "not readily converted" back to FA. That phrase was tested in court on many occasions. Then, as now, the powers that be looked on the existence of certain classes of firearms as not in the spirit of the gun laws and challanged them in order to achieve "favourable" rulings.

They were unable to do this which led the Libs to enact more specific legislation leading us to the present state of affairs.

on some, at the time, it was as simple as DRILLING an extra hole and putting in a pin so the change lever couldn't go all the way over- on my uzi, they changed the design of the lever itself so there's a "step" that doesn't allow it to go to f/a fire- on the m14, they had part of the selector switch ground off and welded inoperable- it varies widely- and if memory serves, you had to have it "certified" that the work was done properly - that meant going to a smith, not bubba- and when all was said and done, they changed it yet again- this time they demanded a non-removable trigger group, which meant welding in the takedown pin, and a trip off to rcmp lab for certification

I had to take an OPP "firearms officer" out to a local gravel pit to test fire a couple of FALs and a Thompson M1A1 to make sure they were converted properly. This particular fellow didn't know how to take the FAL off safe. The thing could have been fully functional and he would never had known if I didn't flip the lever to "fun" mode.

The stupidity of some of these laws still makes me angry when I think of them.

SOME of these laws? The whole pack sucks completely, is written with huge grey areas to allow for creative "interpretation" on the part of LEO and the courts, stomps on a number of Charter rights among others and generally exists solely to further government power and control while doing squat for public safety issues. It all makes my blood boil if I think too much about it...

All the work has to be done by a "certified" gunsmith and then the gun has to be forwarded to the rcmp crime lab for final inspection. This takes time, so much time that I forgot that I owned a number of m14's sent there for inspection. It took 18 months! They were sent to the local detachment for pick up.

My Sten MK2 was converted by flipping the selector switch to SA and then tack welding it in place. That is about as simple as it gets.

My M3 Grease Gun had to have its trigger completely reworked in order to make it work as a semi-auto where it had once been FA only. The trigger pull is ####e but it does work reliably.

Yes, I have seen many that simply had a pin or plate to stop the selector lever from being place on FA. R v. Henderson addressed that one.

the m2 carbines just had the disconector block, spring and plunger selector and spring removed

NO other mods were made to them (of course the m2 reciever is 100% identical to the m1 carbine...)
