Hello all, new to the shotgun world just picked up my Grizzly ( tube mag) in a trade today. my problem is it would cycle high brass rounds. they are just remington 00 and 000 buck and slugs all in 2 3/4. the only way to load them is with gun half racked (forearm fully pulled in towards the reciever) and it will not throw them into the chamber.. i only have high brass rounds laying around so i dunno if it's the ammo or the firearm. did i get scammed in this trade and end up with a gun that wont cycle ammo? agai forgive my newness to shotguns here but this doesnt seem right!

mine wont even feed high brass from the tube, once you load the shells into the tube there doesnt appear to be any way of getting them out, short of depressing the tabs that hold them in there and removing them by hand...

Try some different shells... you should be able to get a box for about $7. Or, call/email/PM the previous owner and ask what they used in it. Different guns have different preferences... my handgun will happily run through Reminton JHP's and American Eagle FMJ's without issues, but a box of Winchester ammunition causes all sorts of fire, feed, and eject problems. Take the time to test it out before you start assuming there's issues with the actual shotgun, and if it does turn out that there's something wrong then talk to the previous owner. It might've been something they never noticed.

Glad to hear that... I hope it works out. I've had a couple situations where I thought I had an issue with a new-to-me gun, but it turned out to be something I'd overlooked. In any event, let us know how it pans out.

So you are saying that when you open the action fully the round is not released from the magazine onto the carrier, correct? If that is the case it is nothing to do with ammunition, it is the gun and it appears your shell latches are not functioning properly.

As the action is cycled to the rear there are cuts in the bottom of the two slide rails (attached to the forend) that cause the shell latches to momentarily open and release the shell from the magazine. Either they are not opening, or not opening enough.
(After you have unloaded and proven SAFE)
Look to see that nothing is broken or bent out of shape, particularly the shell latches. If you know how to take the gun apart, look to see that the shell latches are properly staked in place. Check the slide rails as well to make sure there is nothing bent, broken or damaged.
That is a good place to start anyway, if you can't tell post some photos
Hope that helps

If the round isn't coming out of the magazine and it is factory ammunition that is not obviously deformed or defective there is something up with your gun.

Without seeing photos it is hard to tell. Are the rails straight, without any excessive bows or bends? Any obvious damage to wither the rails of latches?
Any chance you can post some photos?

rails are straight no bends or signs of damage gotta be the shell latches, just pulled it all out without having to depress them to get the bolt assembly and such removed.

Oh that is not normal, when you take off the bolt/forend assembly you usually have to press the left shell latch to get it out. With the trigger group out makes sure they are still staked in place. They can come out if the staking fails or is broken and theoretically could be put in backwards. Do they move in and out when you depress them? i.e are they sticking?

Without a gun in front of me it is hard to think what could be wrong. I will pull one out and troubleshoot when I get home and will pm with suggestions.

Cheers

ahhh ha! got it figured well the proble anyways, the left side latch is catching the rails and wont let me stroke the gun completly! it's bent out slightly and doesn't slide behind the rail instead it prvents it from continuing. so i gotta bend it outwards towards the reciever wall.. any suggestions?

Much appreciated Ike, from what i can tell it's the shell latches, gonna check out how to remove them and inspect them.

edit**** Just did so, one was bent, now to try and get it back in! thaks for the help we will see what this does for me

edit***** didnt work slides are stil getting hung up n the latches... dunno why the latches wont let me rack the slide al the way back....

See this thread here http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=558936

Although its for the Homeland security 780 but basically same design with the shell catch, carrier etc.

Should give you an idea how to fix your problem.

tried tweaking the latches so they wouldnt catch the slide rails and allow it to be fully racked, cracked off in the process, good learning experience, got new on the way. one good thing to come out of this, i'm more familiar now with the 870 action hahaha thanks for the help guys!

Ah, good thing Ike here was on the ball... shame the previous owner hadn't informed you of that, but unfortunately these things happen. At least you got it fixed (or know what you need to do). Any idea on when your parts are arriving?

hoping sometime nexr week, gotta figure a way to stake the latches once they arrive, heard you can use a spring loaded center punch instead of waiting and ordering the specail tool, anyone ever done this?? Ill post if this solves the problem. Again i love this board! good people with tons of knowledge. Cheers!

Although it said its for 1100 but the principle for the cartridge / shell stop is the same on the 870.

Edit: Just find out you can make your own staking tool with a 2" C clamp here (last post):

Good luck on your repair!
