Hi Guys

I'm looking at putting together a better (shorter) bush gun for bear protection for when I am chainsawing in the woods. Smaller is best.

I want to get a grizzly arms with a 12.5" and put a pistol grip on it... HOWEVER I believe this will be too short to stay non-restricted.

Do you guys know, will the "speed feed" pistol grip (the angled one, like on book of Eli, check out http://ww w.speedfeedinc.com/productsmain.html) and a 12.5" barrel be longer then the 26" minimum? Or do I need to go 14".

Thanks,

Barry

I think you will be just under the limit. No way to be sure without actually measuring that pistol grip, but my 870 receiver with a 12.5" barrel is right about 20" overall. To the base of the pistol grip on the traditional full buttstock is 25".

Unless someone here already has the grip you want and can measure, you'd have to buy it first yourself to be sure. Or call Speedfeed USA (Safariland, now, iirc), I'm sure they have the measurements given all the SBS hassle in the US.

You'll need a 14".

Consider a .44mag Rossi Ranchand as well. They are a bit smaller and lighter toy carry and you can run it with a full stock if you want.

6 rounds of .44mag is better then a pointy stick!

I just measured my 870, from the end of the mag tube cap (about where the 12.5" barrel ends) to where that grip looks to end is ~24". Even with a 14" barrel I think you would be really close to the limit.

edit...didn't see you were just putting a pistol grip and no stock...that'll be too short overall

It's 25 3/8" with a 14" Grizzly.
It's hard to find a Speedfeed Witness Pro grip for some reason in Canada and you'd need to stretch out the length somehow to make 26"........you could custom make a slightly longer birds head grip out of an old beat up 870 stock if you are handy with the tools.

youd need to be super careful and measure several times: if you cut down a wood stock, and it comes in a hair under 26", youve just manufactured a prohib.
AFAIK the RCMP measures parallel to the bore, not diagonal - which robs you of a bit of length.

get the black hawk breacher pistol grip
that thing is so ugly :(

Agreed that you should be very careful with your measurements, and leave an extra 1/2" just in case. That sort of a disagreement could be unpleasant, regardless of how right you are.

But modifying a stock while it's off the firearm doesn't create a prohib - Any length and type of pistol grip is legal to possess. Mounting one that's too short on a receiver is what makes the firearm prohib.

I'd guess the real difficulty in cutting down a buttstock would be getting the stock bolt and washer to work - Not sure where the bearing surface is inside the stock.

I've found it really difficult to get Speedfeed product in Canada, too. Brownells won't ship it here last time I asked.

I made mine 26 1/4" and yes it needs to be measured parallel to the barrel.

actually just restricted, not prohib

actually just restricted, not prohib

It's sort of gray area, if you modify the parts yourself and the creation is less then 26" (25.9" or what ever it is) it's prohib but if all the parts are factory it would be restricted.

Makes no sense.

http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-46/page-40.html#h-37

From the Criminal Code, Section 84 definitions:

“prohibited firearm” means

(a) a handgun that

(i) has a barrel equal to or less than 105 mm in length, or

(ii) is designed or adapted to discharge a 25 or 32 calibre cartridge,

but does not include any such handgun that is prescribed, where the handgun is for use in international sporting competitions governed by the rules of the International Shooting Union,

(b) a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,

(i) is less than 660 mm in length, or

(ii) is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,

(c) an automatic firearm, whether or not it has been altered to discharge only one projectile with one pressure of the trigger, or

(d) any firearm that is prescribed to be a prohibited firearm;

Two criteria: Overall length and barrel length. I read that to mean if you modify it after it leaves the retailer (whether by cutting it or putting a shorter stock or barrel on), and it winds up less than 26" overall or with a barrel less than 18", it's prohib.

And yet a 8" grizz with a pistol grip will be restricted. Our laws make no sence
Blame canada

and I thought I had a good understanding of the laws, the wording "alteration" is the grey area.

if you just replace a part is it alteration?
