I'm looking for a 12 gauge shotgun to use as a pack gun, to take in a kayak...something that's small enough to be easily stowed. It's main purpose would be protection from animals and to shoot 12 gauge flares if need be. I plan to carry it in a floating case so I'm not too worried about its finish. Of the options available around the $300 range, is there any advantage for the 14" barrel over the 12.5"?

Thanks.

its only 1.5" difference. not much. I'd wait for the 8" barrel models. that will pack neatly into a kayak.
the norc 14" clones are not threaded for chokes - if thats any concern to you..

i have a 12.5" dlask and it works great i think 8" would lose too much power u still want some barrel length thats just me though since u are in a small boat it would prolly be easier to draw 8" shotgun so u gotta think about that to

8 inch im sure is still plenty of stopping power.
They say the 12.5 inch barrels still put out about 93% of the velocity that a 18.5 does.

8 inch can't be much lower, besides if the 1oz slug is traveling at 1250 fps instead 1500 fps or so, its still going to really bust something up pretty badly.

Your going to have to decide which component (size, speed of deployment, accuracy, power, and stand-off distance) is most important and balance it against the other considerations.

Kayak = limited room + size of case => smaller is probably better. (i.e. larger means leaning against a tree out of reach as opposed to on person when needed).

Speed to deploy: Carry option = Smaller + less mass + less to snag onto => smaller is probably better.

Accuracy = full stock vs. pistol grip / short sight radius vs. longer sight radius / bead vs. ghost ring => full stock with longer sight radius and ghost ring.

Power = short barrel vs. long barrel => depends on what you want with respect to stand-off distance. Inside of 10 yards greater mass means less recoil = greater accuracy: but results in less reaction time.

Stand-off Distance: do you want to address the problem from afar or when its on top of you. Need to revisit previous considerations.

Chance of Needing firearm vs. "task" of carrying/lugging it around.... your call.

The only real difference between them is that a 14"er will more or less fit flush with a +1 magazine extension.

within 40m I have not seen a difference between an 8" barrel, a 12" barrel and a 14" barrel with slugs and 00.

The way I see it, any critter more than 40m away has either already done its damage, or isnt really a threat yet. Anything within 25m is fair game because inside of that you cant react fast enough. So barrel length is basically a mute point for this purpose.

Buy whatever is cheapest and is most comfortable to you, and practice with it lots.

Myself, I am waiting on an 8"

God I have been waiting SO LONG too!

Ike did a thread on velocity loss with his Dlask and a couple of longer barreled 870's.

I'd take the 12.5, simply because we've damn near got the cops trained that they're not instantly illegal - but we're still working on the 8's :) You'll get less hassle i suspect. Then again, maybe not.

I've owned both a 12.5" and a 14" barrel and I kept the 14". Why? The extra round with a +1 extension. That's a major advantage if you ask me. Other than that, they aren't all that different when it comes to handling etc.
