I have a friend who was willed a short barrel gun putting him into the 12.7 class. He is getting married and has to rid himself of his gun. I want to take it off his hands. Does my 12.6 let me buy it or is it 12.7 only while he has it or has to turn it in?

Yes I am well aware of the loss of 12.7 etc etc etc and so is he. He hunts somewhat and never had use for any handguns. He kept it so his uncle wouldn't get it and now the uncle has died and the new wife says no guns no way no how.

Got his .243 off him cheap already....

So...????

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe all 12.7's are transferable to a 12.6 PAL holder. Just not all 12.6 are transferable as a 12.7.

(As in to be transfered to a person who hasn't held a 12.6 authorization on his PAL, the gun it self would have to have been registered as a 12.6. and also be manufactured prior to 1945. Being held as a 12.7 doesn't erode it's 12.6 status, it just slightly expands the owner base.)

That's how I see it but have never personally seen this situation. Just start the transfer and see what happens.

All you have to do is remember that the gun is a prohib. It is the gun owner who is 12/6 or 12/7 not the gun.

12.6 should be able to buy 12.7 without a problem.

On a side note, It is my belief that any woman who wants her man to choose between his toys and her, whatever the toys may be, is a woman who is really, really bad news.

No problem at all if you are 12.6. All the 12.7 does is allow a person to inherit and posess a previously registered firearm that meets the criteria but does not allow the holder to acquire additional prohibs, unless they too are inherited. Just transfer it as per normal, noting it is a prohib and all is well.

its a little more complicated....the lady in question had two family members in a M/S situation and while she has no issue otherwise......she just asked for them not to be around. They have many other great things in common. Its all good.

thanks for the other input....will try transfer.

Yes, a 12.6 PAL holder can take possession of a firearm owned by someone with a 12.7 license.

Personally, I don't care how perfect she might be, or her reasons - "Guns or Else" would happily leave me all alone with a pile of iron for company :D
