My appologies if not posting this in the correct location.

I have a 1867 12.7x44R rolling block swede. I slugged the barrel and it measures about 0.513.

Curious if anyone has used the lee mold 450gr 0.515"?. Any other tidbits or advise regarding BP loads for this would be greatly appreciated.

I have one and have shot it with cast bullets from that Lee Mold, but only with smokeless. I use shortened 50-70 brass (with the rim diameter reduced as well), and was fortunate to have a generously sized chamber so that I didn't have to reduce the case head diameter as others do. I use 50-70 loads and some of my own. With that bullet, I use an OAL of 2.375" and load for a MV of about 1200 fps.

Someone else will have to assist you with Blackpowder loads - here's a good resource on the topic:

Andy,

Thanks for the info. I came across the Dutchman's site a while ago and saw his section on catastrophic failures.

Figured I'd better do a bit more research to make sure my recipe is right.

I was looking on BuffaloArms last night and they are still backordered on 50-70 brass, any recommendations on Canadian sources for brass. It does look like they make a 0.515 mold (350gr I think) which I am going to try instead of the Lee.

The bore on mine slugs closer to .504 (as near as I can tell with the odd number of groves) and the lands are about .485. The mold I use is Lee's number 500-360M. It is a hollow base, 360gr bullet that is .503 as cast. It has a deep hollow base and I'm sure it would bump up quite a bit. Brass is made from .348 Winchester, and most of my loads are black powder.

I had one as well, and I can tell you that the 450 shoots terribly. The RCBS 350 grainer that Buffalo Arms sells is the bomb! I sized mine to .512, and they shot really well with nitro-for-black (don't remember the load, sorry!).

You can make the brass up out of .348 Winchester. That's what happened to all my brass, anyway: feeding my brother's Remington!

Also, the base dimension should be close enough that you can make it up by opening out 8mm Lebel brass, available from Trade-Ex at $35 a bag of 50. Boxer-primed, too, courtesy of our (now-good) pals at Partizan in Serbia!

For reloading, my .50-70 dies work well enough for my brother's rifle.

Hope this helps.

Just the designs look of those Remington rolling blocks make me think light pistol caliber and nothing else if I ever touch one with any intention of firing it.......;)

On that Dutchman site looks like they were pushing martini or snider sized looking bullets out of those things......
