Tradex.com still has some of the old remingtons in this calibre. Is there a more common cartridge that could be used in this old 50 cal. ? I'd like to buy one but I don't want to have to start searching for rare old brass cases or forming brass from scratch. Anyone have any ideas. thx

Yes some will accept 50-70 brass as is or it may need to be shortened or have a gun smith just run a 50-70 reamer into the chamber doesn't take much then you can use 5o-70 brass and dies the chambers are so close no one would even know .I have seen a fair # of them re-chambered now and it seems to work fine .

For newbies, that may be interested in the past and how our sport grew, and some of the great old guns that are still with us......those remingtons are actually ROLLING BLOCKS, the only falling block that I am familiar with the Remington name(other then rimfires) is the Hepburn, a rare and expensive collectors item. Remington made rolling block rifles for many diff. armies in the 1800s and licensed the manufacture to many more.
 
I have one that I shoot. I use 50/70 brass that is shortened, and usually needs to have the base diameter reduced a bit. Other form brass from 348 Win. You can use 50/70 dies (mine are from Lyman).

If you ae in yellowknife, I have one, Had it out to the range on SUnday as a matter of fact. I built a set of dies on my lathe for necking up .348 brass. You would be welcome to borrow some, or, I have a couple of hundred built, I could lend you some to get you started. They are FUN! Also, if you are looking to shoot it make sure you get a centre fire conversion, as the originals (and some of the ones on his site), are rimfire.

When priced out to compare with 50-70, the difference is $30 - $50. Brass is almost the same cost and dies are only $30 more
for the 12.7X44R. You still need a bullet mold. Your actually ahead in the long run as you don't need to pay for a gunsmith to
devaluate the rolling block's collectability by reaming it to 50-70 case dimensions.

Do a search P&S guns and militairia have them as well and are Canadian. they have pics. and a number left.
 
A good mould is the 350 grain LYMAN 515139. It can be used without sizing as a factory duplication bullet. Just rub some SPG into the grooves. I got mine from MID SOUTH Shooters Supply. (Mid South routinely beats factory pricing!) There are a bunch around as the Spencer takes the same bullet.

I use .50-70 Lyman dies, and Starline cases, shortened a bit with rims reduced to fit. Easy-Peasy!
