12" bull barrel vs 16" bull barrel on a 10/22

Barrel length has nothing to do with accuracy. A shorter barrel may actually be better because it is stiffer and this theoretically aids accuracy, but in practice it is more complicated than that.

In case your thinking of a Dlask, they are all out. When I called last Friday all they had was a 12.5 10/22 .760 Factory Contour and a 16.5 .920 .... and I got the last 12.5 .920 ... sorry :D :p

I have a Dlask 12.5" and very happy with it but if they are all sold out... Fabsports has 11.5 and 12.25 in Stainless.

They are made from Green Mountain blanks so accuracy should be quite good. Not sure what blanks Dlask uses for their barrels but they certainly should be better than the factory barrel.

Nearly any aftermarket barrel should give superior accuracy, of course if you have the 10/22 Target model that may not be the case. (Those barrels are better than the base model).

The concern I had with a short barrel was the effect it would have on velocity. When I had mine completed I did a comparison and posted the results.

Here is the post if you are interested..........

The cold weather has finally broken out here and I hope to do some serious accuracy testing this weekend. My 25 yard testing narrowed my ammo selections down to a few types so I hope to try 50 and 100 yards to see what my Dlask 12.5" is capable of.

Sorry I meant the 12.5" from Dlask. And DAMN YOU JT TROUBLE! DAAAAAMMMMNNNNN YYYOOOOUUUUU!!!! :p

lol ... I'll be sure to let you know how it performs ;)

I just hope that they are just taking a break before making more. All their barrels are pretty much sold out, they seem to be popular and you'd think they would keep them in stock.

They seems to be making them. Just have trouble keeping them instock. I picked up a 12.5 factory contour a month ago in their store and was told they were all out of bull in 12.5 But between then and now my friend and people on this forum confirm that they had picked up 12.5 bull and now dlask is out of stock again. So I guess they are constantly making them yet constantly out of stock. Lol

12.5" Dlask rocks. It's now my main back pack rifle after installing it. Accuracy is superb but the 16" IMHO is more accurate though. I have the contoured version of the 12.5" to save weight and not deal with the hassle of creating a larger channel to my stock to accommodate the bull barrel.

There is plenty of data out there indicating that 22lr normal velocity ammo achieves total burn and optimal velocity somewhere between 8 and 10in of barrel length.

That being said, barrel quality, dimensional tolerances and rifling design will affect the number to a small degree. other than that it is fairly safe to say that anything under or longer than 10in or so will produce lower velocities with either insufficient powder burn or complete burn and then frictional drag.

As for accuracy intrinsic accuracy will be where optimal bullet stabization occurs for a specific bullet weight and design/rifling design and velocity.
Way too many variables for any apples to apples comparisons one would think.

I would say a shorter barrel to a certain point would be both stiffer to reduce vibration as well as have reduced "lock time" vs a longer barrel of similar design.

Now when it comes to practical accuracy there are plenty of variables to make it unclear....balance point, pressure points, receiver stress, etc.

Me thinks a 12in~ bull barrel is prolly the best bet for pure velocity and accuracy out of a 22lr rifle of conventional design shooting standard velocity 22lr ammo.
