Hey all. So looking to do some solo remote backpacking this summer and have a nice little pump to slide into the pack. This is a non restricted build, obviously for non park use and for worst case scenario. I know I could get Bear spray but I like the flexability of the 12 Ga (shot, slugs, flares, bear bangers, etc.) Anyway, I'm looking for a nice low recoil slug with less boom. Realistically I'm looking for something with a 50 yard kill, outside of that not to worried as bear that far away I'm not bugging and vice versa. Would a hand load be the way to go or are there factory loads that fit the bill?

Thanks in advance!

Since you can't really get Brenneke slugs in Canada I'd look for some Challanger slugs, me personally I'd be buying full power loads. They're not that bad in the recoil dept, unlike a magnum load. I'd want all the stopping power I could get if a bear was hauling ass towards me lol.

Would you rather have a sore shoulder or a dead bear? Besides you would never feel or remember any recoil in a life or death situation! Slug. Slug. 00.

I can appreciate your thoughts on the matter. There are low recoil slugs out there that can more than do the job. Just looking to see ehat the options are.

Not really, no there isn't. Sure, there are low recoil slugs, but you don't want a soft lead deer slug to deal with an agressive bear. There is a big difference between what will kill a bear and what will stop a bear. I've seen a report (complete with a story and pics to back it up) here of a bear going 60 yards after being shot at close range with a 458Lott. Yogi can be tough little (big?) Bastard.

Look into the hardened lead slugs like challenger, or brenneke. Wanstalls carries the RWS brenneke slugs, and i think Ammo supply carries the challengers.

Hmmm...so 00 buckshot probably not going to
Do the trick either then?

Not with any reliability at 50m - I've shot black bears at 12m and less with 00B and still had them run off to die. And I'm talking totally perforated heart/lungs. Much like people, the only guarantees are CNS hits.

And "low-recoil" anything is less than desirable when it comes to shooting bears...

Penetration to smash shoulders is the best way to stop bears quickly. CNS shots work, but the target area is very small. Many 12ga slugs struggle to break 1 shoulder, let alone 2. 300gr Sabot slugs @2000fps is what I use when a can't carry a rifle.

Find some Federal "Deep Penetrator" 1oz. Slugs. Best Brenneke alternative.

Oh I didn't say shoved away. One hand removal my friend. Just as easy to get at as spray :)

Bear defence... Must be Wednesday!!!! I can't remember; is it ""Shooting into Space" tomorrow, or did we change Thursday to "Beowulf pistol mags"??

Laugh2

OP: I'd leave the shotgun at home... My choice would be a hardcast .45-70...

Some of you guys should actually see what magnum rifled slugs do in ballistic gel, water, even wet newspaper and decide if thats what you want to use. Compare that to a reduced load that vastly outpenetrates magnum loads with short range hits. If going magnum, use a tough slug. Soft deer slugs will break up and fail to penetrate adequately. Managed recoil slugs wi hold together and penetrate much better. The only way to turn up the speed is to use a tougher slug with a harder alloy and prefferably no hollow point.

practice (lots) with the low recoil, but use the heaviest you can find for your outing. Anybody shooting 'defensively' at a bear 50m away should be prosecuted. I suspect most legitimate defense kills are less than half that distance.

Ok, against my better judgement I will bite on this one. I have shot more animals than I can count with low recoil slugs at the side of the road after they have been hit by vehicles. Two words for low recoil slugs - They SUCK. I recommend Challenger slugs as they are about the best of the commonly available slugs in this country (or maybe anywhere). They hit like a hammer, don't come apart and actually penetrate.

I disagree. Practice with what you are going to use in the field.
