Hello Everyone: Went out on Sat to pattern some shells. I do not have pictures, sorry.
My patterning boards were 23" cardboard circles with a 9 1/2" circle drawn on. backing was 1/2" plywood.
12 Ga Pattern Master choke- 3" 00 Buck-9 1/2" circle-6 pellets,23" circle-15 pellets at 30 yrds
3" 00 Buck-9 1/2" circle-2 pellets,23" circle-8 pellets at 40 yrds
3" 00 Buck-9 1/2" circle-0 pellets,23" circle-5 pellets at 50 yrds
3" Lead BB-9 1/2" circle-9 pellets,23" circle-33 pellets at 30 yrds
3" Lead BB-9 1/2" circle-9 pellets,23" circle-25 pellets at 40 yrds
3" Lead BB-9 1/2" circle-5 pellets,23" circle-12 pellets at 50 yrds
I was using a Remington 870 Express 3" shotgun. The 00 Buck plowed through the plywood at all distances, which is no surprise. The Lead BB did not penetrate so well at all distances. A few of the pellets made it through at 30 yrds not many. None at 40 or 50 yrds.
So far I would be confident using the 00 Buck on a Coyote at 30 yrds, I don't know to much about retained energy of the Lead BB the patterns were good to 40 yrds. However the penetration has me worried about a clean kill.
I still have more work to do before I am confident to bring my shotgun on Coyote hunt. I would like to try some 4 Buck, but around Winnipeg its like hens teeth. I also did try modified choke with above loads and results were not worth mentioning.
The search for the right combo continues......
