So I just picked up a Mossberg Maverick 88 12-gauge shotgun that a good friend (now possibly my best friend!) sold to me for $100(!!!!).

He took me to a sand pit to show me how it works (load, unload, safety, take apart for cleaning, load, unload, safety...), and then we fired a few rounds at an empty 2 litre plastic pop bottle. OH MY GOD !!!!! Was that ever fun!!!!

I haven't shot anything since I was 12 (and am now in my 30's), and that, back then, was a 22. This 12g kick a$$!!.

As a present, he also GAVE me a sporterized No4Mk1. No joke. He gave it to me. He tells me: "My grandfather gave it to me, and I shot my first deer with it. I don't have kids, so I'd like you to have it. When you're ready, we'll go get you a deer or bear." The rear sights have been yanked and replaced with scope rings. Once I put a scope on that bad-boy, I'll be ready.

Now I wait for the .22 to come in (just made the transaction on EE), and then it's practice, practice, practice.

I'm hooked!

Its addicting!!! I just got my licence in April. My uncle left me 4 rifles and I have already bought 2 more... with a third surely on the way in a week or 2 I would say... Depends if I buy a safe at costco or not.

"...GAVE me a sporterized No4Mk1..." Have the headspace checked before you shoot it. Even though your buddy has fired it.
"...put a scope on..." Think 2.5x to 8x or 3x to 9x or a fixed 4X. Anything more is too much. Both in money and magnification.
"...never a 12 guage..." Nothing to be embarassed about. What you've fired is more about the firearm than the cartridge. I've fired a .44 Mag Desert Eagle, but never a .44 Mag revolver. Not a big deal.
"...12-gauge for the first time..." Mine was a 3" magnum at about 17 or 18. The guy didn't bother telling me about it either. Suspect he was getting even for being asked to leave the property he was trespassing on. I seemed to have survived.

yep, shotguns are the maximum bang-for-buck as far as fun goes (only cause we can't play with submachine guns). My buddies and I have a wide assortment of shotguns, from a 20 guage single shot for first timers of a smaller stature, to a cut down 12 guage with a steel buttplate for more macho types. No one can resist the fun of shooting a jug of coloured water.

I actually just shot a 12 gauge for the first time last sunday with a fellow CGN'er. Kicked off about 80 rounds or so of various different shots.

Shoulder is just about back to normal and the yellow and black from the bruising is just about gone. Definatly an awsome time.

That's a good deal and a very generous friend.

I'm jelous. I bought my Maverick a couple weeks ago for $200 which is lowest price you can buy one in Canada. I'm hoping to go put a few shells through her today.
