12 Gauge Foster Slug - Black Bear Effectiveness?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some first hand accounts from anyone that has actually used generic 12 gauge foster slugs (think Winchester, Federal & Remington!) on game such as black bear, caribou and moose!

I know there must have been a gazillion animals killed here in Canada with them, by both private citizens and govt. organizations, since we don't have the same access to the fancy Brenneke stuff they do down South.

How did they perform and are they suitable for black bear protection, close range moose hunting, etc.

I know that all of North America's bear and moose species have been cleanly taken with various compound bows and arrow combinations so I fail to see why a 437 grain piece of lead moving at 1600 fps wouldn't be effective!

Thanks!

For hunting deer and moose a Foster slug will just do fine.
However, I would not use Fosters for bear defense ... there are much better choices on the Canadian market.

Some of the Foster slugs have a tendency to flatten and as a result will not penetrate.

In my neck of the woods (PéQistan), shotguns are legal for moose hunting, 10 or 12 gauge with a single projectile, meaning a slug of course, with a sabot or without. Some three years ago, I met a hunter at my Gun Club who had already killed two mooses at about 50 yards, from what I can remember, with a very ordinary 10 gauge break open action shotgun and some slugs that eludes me right now. He told me that both mooses had decided, after being shot (lungs), to stop right there. This thread, about 12 gauge Forster slugs for black bear, will be very interesting because I am always looking out for people who have used shotgun slugs on big game - meaning deer, caribou, elk, moose and bear too (black/grizzly/brown/polar). Just because I would like to know how the shotguns/slugs performed.

I have read and reread 0faustus0 threads (tests) I don't know how many times now - fascinating !
