I was thinking of something along the lines of this: get some of those walmart 100 round packs of 12 gauge shotshells and pull the shot out, and replace it with one of the steel slugs described on 'gunwriters on the web' - any suggestions? I think it would be a worthwhile project but getting the slug dimensions down and other factors would be interesting too.

Edit: of course the steel slugs would have to be made up somehow.

I wouldn't bother with steel slugs. Just ponnie up the $30 for a Lee slug mold & start casting your own slugs from wheel weights. You really don't need a lot of fancy equipment to cast lead, just be safety conscious & wear longsleeves, gloves, & safety glasses. Hot lead will give you one hell of a burn if it splashes on you!

This sounds like an extremely dangerous course of action. I haven't read the articles on steel slugs, but the thought of trying to pull down shotshells (if you could even do it without completely messing up the case mouth) and replacing the shot with something else! Who knows what would happen with pressure, going through the forcing cone and the barrel.

Lee load all $50, slug mold $25, powder $25, wads $7, load 4 boxes of 25 and the investment is paid for.
But the problem is you don't stop at 1 mold!!

Why not use a ball bearing?

Another vote for the home cast Lee slugs and a loadall. For .25 to .30 cents a round I can blast the crap outta jugs at the range all day while other guys are paying 1.00+ per shot for factory slugs.

The Lee slugs are pretty accurate out of my smoothbore and after giving some to friends the report back was that they were accurate in thier shotguns as well.

You could even drill the top center of the slug out and make it a hollow point. I haven't tried this yet but it is on my list of things to try when the weather gets better.

Use pure lead for shotgun slugs, wheel weights are for pistol bullets.

"Lee Key Drive Slugs" are designed to use wheelweights, the metal does not contact the bore in any way, they are designed to fit into the shotcups so it does not really matter - I don't know why I am not ordering a set up now, shotgun barrels are a pain in the ass to clean after use with common foster slugs.
