I’ve been looking at buying a muzzle loader. The one I wanted was the older CVA wolf with the hexagon barrel , but looks like all the new ones are round?
Anyways I was looking at some utube video the other day and came across a adapter for a 12 gauge to make it into a muzzle loader, has anyone tried one out? Doesn’t look that hard to make... also there is a company in the USA that make an adapter, that looks like a shotgun shell .... you just load it with a 209 primer and black powder.....etc..etc.., just like reloading a regular shotgun shell.
My question, are the adapter legal in Ontario for muzzle loader season? I reload shotgun slugs already, and have the Lee 7/8 oz and 1 oz molds. So to take it a step further I could , or can uses most of the reloading supplies I have, the slugs I cast, can I uses the double AA wads? And the black powder( or the same smokeless powder uses to reload regular shotgun shells) .
Not exactly The traditional muzzle loade way... but was wondering how legal all this mess would be.
Cheers

And the shotgun I was going to try it out on is a single barrel, with no choke, someone already cut the barrel down to 22”

I have a Cooey model 84 12 gauge that has been converted into a muzzleloader. Never shot it so can't tell you how well it works but it was used by the previous owner before I got it.

Now this is purely speculative, but I would think if it does not load from the muzzle, it would not qualify for a muzzle loader season...?

A slide in breech plug can be a projectile from a break action shotgun - if it unlocks on you - not unheard of.
Or if you have a hangfire and it discharges as you open the breech.
There were H&R muzzleloaders like this. They went to permanently pinned breech plug after some legal trouble arising from accidents.

There was a you tube video where some guy cut the brass off spent shotgun shells , reprimed them and used the in a break open shot gun.
He`d put the brass in, close it and finish loading from the top. I think it would work in “if you had to” situation as the chamber will make keeping the powder and shot in place a bit more difficult. Not something I’d do on a regular basis sitting in the duck blind

I think if you do decide to try using an adaptor, you would be exceedingly wise to only do so on a shotgun with an outside hammer. When you open a hammerless shotgun to put your primed adapter in you are also cocking the gun. If the sear ever slipped while you were loading, you would more or less take your hand off

The Ont hunting summary defines muzzleloader as a firearm loaded from the muzzle. Your description of the adapter suggests it could be loaded, pre charged, into the breech, therefore not meeting the requirements for use during muzzleloading season.
There would be no impediments to its use for other gun seasons.
That's just my read, of course. MNR would give you the definitive answer.

Here are a couple of pics on how my 84 was done up. I have not tried to remove it. I picked the gun up just to have in the Cooey collection. Don't plan on using it.

The 209 adapters are legal in ontario for muzzleloading seasons. Do not load with slugs as theyre designed solely for shot. A slug will be loose and undersized in the chamber area allowing gasses to pass it in the chamber

The barrel or barrels are loaded first then the gun is opened to place the 209 primer in the pocket. No more dangerous then loading a traditional shotgun shell. In the event of a hangfire if the gun were to open the adapter may be launched from the chamber. Safe gun handling practises are advised.

A CVA wolf is cheap (250$ +-) and, will be WAY more accurate and effective.
I did what you said 20y ago when I was young and poor. Buy a real one with good sights or scope base.
