Brass shells are basically black powder only as their ballon head and most powders do no burn very well in them other then black and their is no load data available for them in smokeless anyway.

black powder or substitute like pyrodex
Nitro cards

I load both black and smokeless in brass cases depending on the gun. However, I only load smokeless in .410, 16’s and 20’s I load Black because I don’t need to use them with smokeless. I shoot brass exclusively in the .410, black or smokeless depending on the gun.

Smokeless will work within limits in the .410. issue is the bigger cases most of the powder is below the primer pocket tbi can case a lot of it to not burn or even bloopers.

Interesting point. Hadnt considered that. Will ponder io that for a bit. Thanks. Don’t know why I would want to load smokeless in the bigger ones but you never know.

CBC had data available years ago for a smokeless they used. Others have gotten away with a Russian duplex small charge of BP under smokeless to kick it off.

I have been thinking about this and while I see and understand your point about the main powder charge, bring relatively small being below the primer, a solution occurred to me (shoukd I choose to dhoot smokeless in my larger brass cases. That solution is to take a nitro card and drill an appropriate size hole and install it kinda like a paper base shotshell. This would bring tje “floor” of the case up to or close to the level of the primer.
