12g semi for trap?

I have seen lots of Remington 1100's on the line at our club. Plenty older 1100's can be found on the EE with fixed full chokes. Get yourself a shell catcher to attach to the gun to stop the hulls from bouncing off your neighbour.

Almost any semi auto will work for trap but not a lot of manufacturers make a model specifically for trap, Remington is one of the few with the 1100 trap model. Keep in mind that a trap model while being ideal for the game of trap will not be ideal for other shotgun sports therefore a sporting clays model or a field model will be a better all around gun while still working fine for trap.

Beretta and Remington both make dedicated trap semi-autos. There was a 1100 competition in the EE for sale. I have shot the 1100 Competition, 1100 Trap and a Beretta Xcel 400. I found the Beretta to be extremely light but it broke targets just fine. Many shooters complain about the 1100 being unreliable but you see lots of them on the trap range. If you intend to shoot skeet or double trap, semis are a PITA to load. Not overly difficult, just a PITA.

As mentioned, the Remington 1100 has a large faithful and satisfied following, Beretta 400 is great but more money, their older models like the 390, 391 should also be considered. And as mentioned, a sporting clays model or even a field gun will be more versatile and are easier to find. Any decent gun will work but these two brands have a well earned track record of providing years of service through tens of thousands of rounds. If recoil reduction is your goal, the gas operated guns are the way to go. The BT 99 of course is not an autoloader like you are looking for, it is a very rugged single shot trap gun that is made for trap singles and handicap, it excels at these but is pretty well useless for anything else.

Maybe keep a look out for a 390 or 391 Parallel Target. They come up on EE every now and again and are great affordable trap guns. It’s pretty easy to tell how hard they’ve been shot by looking at the loading/ejection port and the amount of wear in that area.

This is alll good info. I have been looking for an old beretta like the 390s but have not had any luck lately. I ended up ordering a benelli montefeltro sporting 12/30 today as I dont want to miss anymore trap days! Should have it by the end of the week.

Hey looking for some opinions on a good semi 12g for trap shooting. Not looking for super fancy just something quality that will get the job done.

Your options are open to many guns.
You looking for new or used? Price?
New you can look at Beretta, Winchester, Benelli etc for any of their models..... not sure of Remington since their bankruptcy in july
Used, again same manufactures above.

First overall is FIT if it does not FIT does not matter on who makes it.... don't buy it cause its in your price range.
Try them all and see what fits.

I shoot a Rem 1100 competition, i do feel its barrel heavy and shoots about 50/50. when I first got it I was told they break all the time and you better have spare parts around so I ordered $150.00 of spare parts and after 5 years all of the spares parts are still packaged unused waiting for something to break.
I like to see more of the target so I am moving to a over/under set up for 70/30

good luck in your search
