I am heading for Africa next year and apparently a shotgun is recommended for shooting some of the little 4 legged critters on my wish list. I am not much into shotyguns, but I am thinking what folks use on coyotes in this country might be adequate for Africa. So the question is to the coyote callers who use shotguns . What load do you use and what do you consider effective range ? I have watched a few TV shows , but it is hard to tell what range they shoot. And I do not remember and ammo information .Thanks.

I use #4 buck or BB in lead. Sxs 12 ga f/m chokes. Never had an issue inside 50 yards. #4 buck will kill out to 75 yards if you have the choke

Dikdik doikers or other small deer type things #4 buck will kill them quick but if they're close body mounts will require some stitching

I agree #4buck is the way to go I have rolled a number of yotes out past 50 yards .just pattern your shot gun and see what you get .Dutch

Check the laws of the country you'll be traveling to before you decide to take you favorite auto or pump. In Tanzania our PH had a Benelli auto, so I assume you're good there, although that was 8 years ago now, but I can't vouch for anywhere else.

If I had a favorite double it would probably accompany me, if not I would probably borrow whatever my PH had in country upon arrival and trust to his judgement with regards to loads. Especially if I didn't already have a shotgun.

Personally, I prefer lighter rifle rounds for coyotes just for fur damage reasons and because there have been times when my range needed to go from short to longer quickly if something spooks them. That said, I have used #4 buck for this task when in close say 30-50 yards. Beyond that distance is still entirely possible, but there are better tools for the job IMO.

I haven't shot a coyote with this stuff yet but they knock down silos with with good force at 40 yards!
