I'm headed up to Englehart with my cousin to do a little Upland & Rabbit hunting, and was just wondering.... There was bear sign all over the place where we hunt (Uncle was there on the Labour Day weekend), and a bear even crossed the road behind the car... Can I fire rifled slugs out my Mod. Choke? I know I can't with a full choke, but I hunt with a Mod.... I'm not gonna blow up my gun if I have to pop a few slugs into a black bear am I?

I could be very wrong but I've been told that you can fire slugs through any choke including full (not sure bout over full chokes used for turkey). I was told that they are manufuctured to be safe for full choked guns as someone may put them through it kinda like how 45 70 factory rounds are loaded down as to be safe to fire through real old buffalo guns that can't handle full presure loads the modern firearms can. Going to look into this further.

On my M4 it is a mod choke and accuracy is great... JP.

If you have to pop a few slugs into a Black Bear , you are going to be having more problems to worry about.
Meaning a well placed shot will drop a Black Bear like a sack f spuds dropped from your shoulder.

If the Bear takes more than two Well Placed Shots you are dealing with a Zombie Bear and no matter how much lead you shoot into it, it will not die.
Yes, your choke and some good ammo choice will take care of most any Blackie in North America.
Tight Groups,

I fire slugs through my full choke auto 5, its a sweet smoothbore slug gun, the ridge in the humpback is like a rear sight. At 50 yards offhand I can put 3 rounds inside 6" as fast as I can pull the trigger. Btw, there is more recoil with a full choke, but, its not something your gonna feel if your shooting a charging black bear.

Use Foster rifled slugs, all Foster type slugs can be fired through any choke constriction safely.
That is actually one of the functions of the raised lead that looks like rifling, it allows the slug to compress somewhat and fit through a tight choke.

If you're planning on carrying some slugs in your pocket while rabbit hunting, then you'd better plan on carrying a bear tag too;

" If you are hunting small game in an area where there is an open season for deer, moose, elk, or black bear, you may not possess or use a rifle of greater muzzle energy than 400 foot-pounds or shells loaded with ball or with shot larger than No. 2 Shot unless you possess a valid licence to hunt deer, moose, elk or black bear as the case may be."

The original Brenneke or Rottweil Exact work very well in smooth bore guns too.
