So I've been recreationally shooting trap/skeet once a week for about 2 years now, and I typically shoot 4-5 rounds at a time. Since a case of Topgun shells are $70/case here, I've decided to throw around the idea of reloading. However, after shopping around and finding the best prices I can locally / mail order, and putting them into a price calculator, I can barely break even. Is this what things are generally costing people to reload nowadays? All prices are CDN.

Primers: 1000 for $53
Powder (20gr. load): 1lb for $30
Wads: 250 for $9
Shot (1 oz loads): 25lb for $40 (this seems really high, but 2 local places and one mail order charge this)
Hulls: n/a

This makes the cost of a box of 12g shells $6.87. That means I only save $1.30 over buying a full case of topguns.

Anything wrong here?

The only way to buy powder is 7 or 8 lbs at one time. IMR 700X 169.99
Wads from Claybuster 5000 at a time
Primers 209's should be less than 53.00 per 1000.
Lead is tough to find at a decent price
Then you have to buy a press, there are used ones for sale cheap, say $200.00

Now you should load 1oz loads and get nearly 400 from a 25lb bag of shot, few more if you load 7/8oz.
Should get you cost around $5.25 per box. FS

X2...I buy primers 5000 at a time and they cost me $36-$37 a thousand on my last purchase. It all comes down to how much you shoot and how willing you are to buy in bulk.

Well I from my experience, Primers should only cost you about 150-200 for 5000, powder it depends. Promo about $90 for 8 lbs and American Select about $140 for 8lbs. Even wads if you buy them in a case of 5000 they should be less.

That will cut the costs.

Isn't finding lead shot for reloading the hard part?

I looked at it a month or so ago and for target loads it was almost cheaper to buy the 100 packs at CT for 30.00 (for the amount I shoot). For you guys that shoot more, it is probably worth it.

Where the savings lie for me is slugs. Those are a dollar and a bit per shot off the shelf. I can load my own for about 25-30 cents each before tax less if I buy bulk.

Based on what I bought yesterday Powder 32.00 1lb, 100 primers 6.00, and 250 wads for 12.00. I cast my own slugs with free lead so it breaks down to Primers .06, Powder .14 (225 loads @31gr), and Wads.05 before tax.

I walked past a pile of Winchester AAs the other day for $69 a flat. It'll be a cold day in hell before I pull the lever for 3 cents a box.
