A buddy just gave me 11 boxes of Federal Hi-Shok 270 cartridges loaded with 130 grain Speer Grand Slam bullets.

What is the effectiveness and reputation of this load?

If they're any good I may never have to buy ammo for my 270 again.

A friend of mine has shot over a dozen elk with this load. All one shot kills, and no lost animals. He is picky about the shot he will take so perhaps it is not the bullet?

they are great bullets.

SPEER used to make them in loaded ammo called NITREX but they quit making them and now it looks like they are selling under the FEDERAL name instead. The Nitrex were 130 grain GS bullets going about 3100fps muzzle. I loved them - still have some.

if you don't want them let me know..............

MD, stay away from the 130 GS by Speer.
Shot my first Blk Bear with that bullet choice and the first one exploded inside into a million tiny bits.
Of course it went through a rib bone as did the second one.
Never did find anything of either said bullet and did recover the animal, but it was not fun or a pretty sight.
There are is a better choice and it starts with B.
Just my observations.

I never recovered any of my GS bullets either - they all went right through the animals......
Entry hole was about 1/4 inch, exit hole was about 1 1/2 inches.
Blood trail a blind man could follow, and I didn't have to follow it far.
