I am interested in getting a 1322 for groundhog control, but i don't know if it would kill or just wound. I have read plenty of hunts with this gun for squirrels, but would it be enough for a groundhog? any input would help thx

When I was a kid I had the same gun and tried to kill a groundhog living under our garage. It is not enough gun. All it will do is cause suffering. Please find a better choice. Used single shot .22 would be a much better choice and probably the same price as a new 1322.

Advice here is perfectly spot-on. I've been actively hunting groundhogs going on 5 years now, and the minimum to put a groundhog down hard is a 22 Mag. .22lr isn't a bad choice if you're close and are guaranteed a head shot. At the distances most wild groundhogs will let you get (seldom closer than 50-75 yards) I honestly think even .22lr isn't enough. I've been up the ladder from pellet guns (as a kid once in a while, never successful) to .22lr, .17HMR, .22WMR (22mag) and now only hunt with a .223. Among rimfires, 22WMR is by far the best in my opinion, but your range is limited to about 100-120 max yards for a fast, humane kill.

A sub-500fps air pistol will do nothing but inflict a cruel wound. Better to ask the question and get the straight goods though.

I appreciate the feed back, I have killed many ground hog with .22 and other calibers, but my problem with this ground hog is that he lives under my shed in and urban area, it is also illegal to discharge a firearm in the city I live in, the last thing i want is to wound the little bugger.

I expect the city by-law would not be limited to only guns that go "bang". A bow? although some conditions limit their use as well. The most sure way of avoiding persecution is live trap, then after use, {cough} put live trap in the rain barrel behind the shed.

bow was my next choice, but its a big step up from 70$ airgun, even used a bow will cost big$$$... as for the trap it takes the sport out of urban woodchuck hunting... i guess i was just trying to justify the purchase of a new toy :(
thanks for all the responses

A 1322 would be a fun, new toy (I've had a 1377 since 1985) so I'd say get it if you want one. Just don't shoot a groundhog with it.

I'd say, based on your "urban woodchuck hunting" comment, that you have mixed motives. You either want a nuisance rodent gone from your property legally, or, you should want to hunt groundhogs using sufficient firepower where it's legal to do so. There should be no in-between.

ive shot a ground hog with a .22 and not been able to kill it till i got the headshot..there so fat the .22 rimfire dont even do much to them....mind you i didnt have hollowpoints back then either..so definatley your airgun wont do it!

My bro had same problem in city and a shovel worked for him. No he did not dig him out , he just watched from behind shed until he got a bit to far from his hole.
