Im thinking of selling me AR-180b2 and drinking the AR15 kool-aid. I hvent really been taking advantage of the non-res feature of the AR-180 other then freking out the ocasional person at Nonquon :D. There seems to be allot of 20" HBAR flatops used for about 1100-1200$ im going to be using it for Service CQB and casual target shooting. Is it worth it paying extra for a 14.5" carbine?

A:

I can empathize (big words here) with your budget, but have you looked at a Norc M4? There were a couple on the line at our Service CQB matches/clinics over the summer and fall. They were bought for around $ 900ish.

And I do have to say that those HBAR's are well priced hovering around the $ 1100 to $ 1200 mark. :D

However, one does have to admit that the 14.5" or 16" barrels sure look cool! Because we CAN! That's why!!

You could always buy a decent used rifle with a 20" barrel and piece together a carbine upper receiver group together...

thats a little outside of my student budget lol....

And hungry yes i had though of the Norc AR but when i saw the used HBARs for only a few hundred more i reconsidered them

If you are going to be shooting CQB at Borden, a Norinco would be fine. A new Norc. costs less than one of the used 20" ones you mention. You aren't going to get a used carbine for the price of the M4gery.
With an decent sight you could also shoot service rifle with it - although if you were going to shoot only service rifle competitively, one of those 20" rifles could be a better bet.
I used to hunt in the Nonquon over 35 years ago, when it was my misfortune to live in Scarberia. Generally used a muzzleloader, though. Of course in those days an AR was just another rifle.

yep atm i only do CQB at borden, looking at maybe getting into some other stuff down the line.... prob going to go with a norc

Why not get a 16"? It's not that much longer than the 14.5, so it's just as handy/compact, yet offers slightly better muzzle velocity and (except for the Norinco) are generally cheaper/easier to get from the USA than the 14.5" "mil-spec"/uber-tactical/ninja uppers.
