Hey guys, I have not used one yet, (14") but I'm getting one very, soon. I was just wondering if anyone has tried a red dot ( I have a TRS Bushnell ) on one? I think it would be fun. I assume the bead itself likely won't hit bang on with slugs but be close.

The TRS-25 is a fine optic for plenty of other guns.
But it's not made for the recoil of a 12-gauge.

You'll need to get a more expensive optic. One that's made to take abusive recoil.

Your mounting system also needs to be rock solid.

I was leery about the longevity of cheap RDS on a shotgun. Took a chance on a Primary Arms unit and it worked fine and held zero, in a match situation. They are similar to the Holosun units. These will be the cheapest units I would try. Do NOT buy Sun Optics or NC Star!!!
Or do as DILLI suggests. Go Trijicon or Aimpoint.

I've been running an Aimpoint T-1 on my 14"bbl Mossberg M-590A1 for two years an about 1800 short and 400 tall brass. I've had no issues with it whatsoever. I use a full co-witness mount by ADM. The set up has proven to be very robust with no zero loss.

Had a trs25 on my 20" Fabarm for a year, it handled the recoil fine. I shot slugs, buck and target load through it. It now resides on an sks as my shotgun is now used for hunting and not just a range toy, I know my poa/poi well enough with slugs out far enough to hunt a deer in thick bush so I just use the front bead now. I found the trs25 to be well able to handle 12g recoil.

I think I would go reflex style if I had to buy another red dot. Vortex looks to be slightly easier to change batteries, and slightly cheaper to purchase than others.

...have a look at the Burris Fastfire , you see lot of them on shotguns

Absolutely. I have a Burris Fastfire III on a 14" Mossberg 590A1. Works perfectly, been on there for about 300 rounds, mostly 2 3/4" 00 buckshot and some 1 oz slugs.

Of course the 14" 590A1 is heavier than some short shotguns so the weight is a factor in felt recoil and presumably recoil transferred to the optic. But Canadaammo's Dominion Arms Grizzlies are also pretty heavy too. Some of the shorty Turkish shorty shotguns are lighter, so I can't speak for them.

I'm usually not a fan of Burris optics, but that little reflex sight is a real winner. I own a couple of them.

I had a 12 1/2 inch 870 that had a TRS25 on it - it worked perfectly, but I was using a Mesa saddle mount. There's a fair bit of flex in that mount, which may have helped. I had no issues with it, but I did have to notch the forend to clear the mount.

I don't find red dots on a shotgun to be of any benefit over a fiber optic front sight, unless lighting is an issue.

Red dots are great on short barreled shotguns that have only a low sitting bead and no ramp or pedestal front sight.

I use a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot on my modified bore 14" 590A1. The dot is super bright in sunny daylight conditions and easily holds up to 12g recoil.
