140 or 150 grain in a 280 for all game?

Shhhhhhhhhhh

Don't tell everyone!!

A few factory offerings have them but they are considered premium and come with a premium price.

Not carried by the large stores usually but there are a fair number of smaller places that have them, actually, never had a problem getting them, now I am the one who needs to be quite!

One of the best, not sure why they aren't more popular.

I would go with the partition given the choice. But with either round, I wouldn't hesitate on any of the game you mentioned. Aim well, and dump um!

I accidently bought a box of federal with the Nosler Ballistic tip in October. I was in a rush at WS in Nanaimo and looked at the 280 cartidges availalble and the clerk said "this box here has Nosler bullets" and I stupidly assumed he meant Partitions and when I got home found they were ballistic tips.

Oh well, expensive plinking I guess, I can get to know my trigger. I don't think I want to hunt big game with those.

I have killed more than a few dozen head of deer sized game with 140gr Ballistic Tips out of my 7mm-08,7mmremmag, and 7mmstw rifles. I never had any issues with any of them.

140gr accubond, imr4350, 2800fps ish 7X57 mauser. The original 7mm. Light recoil, accurate and I trust it no questions. Have never recovered a bullet.

Would you shoot a black bear with one? I read they were very self-destructive, as in exploding on impact.

In general the Ballistic Tips are quite soft ,but they certainly don't explode on impact. When launched at 3500fps, the .284"- 140gr version generally exits with broadside lung shots on deer, but if they hit a shoulder, they damage a lot of meat, and usually don't exit. The 120gr version is actually a little tougher, since it was made with a thicker jacket for silhouette shooting. I personally would choose a tougher bullet for black bear, although it would probably work fine on lung shots.
