Did someone add a custom High Comb onto the factory stock?

Those are my thoughts as well. Stock looks heavily altered. I think there would still be some collector interest because it's a rare chambering in a pre-war rifle, but the value has certainly been trashed compared with an unaltered one.

Y'Know, I dunno about that.

The chambering is rare enough, that as long as the metalwork has not seen the marvels of a high powered buffer that blurred out all the print on the sides of it, there will be more than just a little interest in it, simply because there are a fair few factory stocks still out there, courtesy of too many magazine articles extolling the supposed virtues of the controlled round feed.

As long as the stock that it gets fitted to is of the right era, like as not, nobody will ever know it was not a Factory fit, save the guy that does it.

Anyhoo, I would like as not, have grabbed at it, had it passed in my reach too. :)

Im not sure what is happening with the stock at this point. THere's obviously a repair or alteration, but not sure until it's in my hands. It has also been drilled so it's unfortunately not the collector's piece that I was hoping for, nonetheless, it'll get some use from me.

You did well. There aren't too many here that would have passed on this rifle, regardless if it was altered or not.
Had you passed, it would have haunted your dreams.
