I am in process of preparing some loads for my new gun. It is a Tikka T3 chambered in 300 win mag. This gun will be used mostly for deer hunting and occasionally for target shooting to 500-600m.
I have an abundance of HDY 150gn SST, Sierra 150gn GK and Sierra 165gn GK bullets and I want to use these bullets for my new load. Especially the 150gn's, because of flatter trajectory and less recoil.
Some preliminary runs on QuickLoad predict velocities up to 3300fps for Sierra 150gn bullet using IMR 4895 as powder.

Questions: Has anyone loaded 150gn bullets on 300 Win Mag? To what velocities? How is the accuracy and the terminal ballistics?

I used to load 150 NBTs over a stiff load of 4831 for deer. It would smack them so hard that you'd swear it was snowing out. Don't remember having to follow any around afterwards.

4895 sounds a little slow for .300WM to me. When I had one I usually used H4831. I mostly used 180gr for full power loads though. I did use 150gr with max .308 data using H4895 for some reduced recoil loads that proved as accurate as the full loads.

^^ I think he meant to say the 4895 powder is fast for a 150 in 300Mag. 61gr - 3100fps

On the other hand, peak velocity is not required for deer.

Powder in the 4350 range would be what I would use. 76 gr - 3300 fps

I used hundreds of 150's ( the most inexpensive I could find, mostly Hornady bulk bag stuff) in my .300 WM when I had it on sheep, deer & elk and more than a few coyotes and as dogleg says " you don't have to follow much" ...as well I used Ganderites powder recommendation IMR 4350

Well. I was yesterday in the range testing loads from 59.2gn to 61gn of IMR4895 behind 150gn Sierra GK bullets.
Measured velocity was at 3100 - 3200fps. Best results (0.3MOA @100yd) with 60gn powder. Another trip is needed to refine that load.

Not very much exited though as the gun was kicking like a mule, much much worse then lets say (my comparable) 30-06, shooting the same bullet at 2965fps.

Sounds like my 30-06 load with 150’s. It’s a 22” doing 3000fps
