16.5 inch stainless 358 barrel

Ruger made the Frontier wth a 16.5 in .358. I have one it’s a great hunting rig, mine shoots sub moa with 250 Hornady’s using IMR 4198
I also have one in .308 great super accurate gun, and a superb killer with 150 flat base Hornady Interlocks.

stainless by chance?...I have a little ruger in 308/16.5 but like something with a bit more jam for grizzly country....358 carries out pretty well, more than people realize...

You buy a new barrel blank in the contour you want and any gunsmith with a .358 Winchester reamer could build it for you. Myself included...

Ruger frontier in 358 and a rem model 7 with 20” Be van king brl in wildcat stock at home. Handy platform and mild recoil with Hornady 250

This is the way to go , re barrel any .308 or .243 bolt gun with a short barrel and your in business.

my understanding of the law is that anything less than 18 inches has to come from a "manufacturer" that way????

The custom made barrel by a barrel maker is from the manufacturer and can be cut to a finished length under 18 inches ... you could not cut a Remington barrel that short...

Personally I think 18 or 20 inches is a better length for a .358 Win. I don't understand all the hype about super short barrels...

hmmmm….so you are anyone can cut a barrel blank shorter than 18 inches....I think the NFA explains this...

CC s. 84(1) “prohibited firearm” (d): If the barrel has been SHORTENED to less than 18″/457mm, after leaving the factory, “by sawing, cutting or ANY other alteration or modification” that forces the firearm into the “prohibited firearm” class.
NOTE: The firearm is NOT forced into the “prohibited firearm” class if it left the factory with the barrel at below-18″/457mm barrel length. I have, for example, a .22 rimfire semi-auto 30-shot rifle with a 9-3/4″ barrel, a .410 single-shot shotgun with an 11-3/4″ barrel, two 12-gauge pump-action shotguns with 14″ barrels, a .22 rimfire pump-action rifle with a 17-7/8″ custom barrel and a .223 calibre rifle with a 14″ barrel — AND ALL OF THEM ARE NON-RESTRICTED. THAT IS BECAUSE THEY EITHER LEFT THE FACTORY WITH THOSE BARRELS, OR WERE FITTED WITH FACTORY- OR CUSTOM-MADE BARRELS IN THOSE LENGTHS AT SOME LATER DATE, and were NEVER fitted with a longer barrel. One left the factory with NO barrel, and so a 14″ barrel could be legally fitted.
